Welcome back to the Forza Week in Review, where we’re ringing in the Series 12 update for Forza Horizon 4 along with a new LEGO-themed barn find car, celebrating Forza Motorsport 6 as a Games With Gold entry in August, welcoming a new (but NOT T10) guest to #ForzaFriday, and looking ahead to Monday’s episode of “Forza Monthly.” Let’s go!

WHEEL AND PEDAL WEDNESDAY | 2012 CATERHAM R400
  • "William Chen, Franchise Manager for Turn 10 Studios, has raced go-karts and always been a car lover. ... Check out this week’s replay of Wheel & Pedal Wednesday where Johniwanna talks with William about what it’s like to own a road-legal track toy."

#FORZAFRIDAY LIVESTREAM - GUEST JEFF EASTERLING
  • "We’re welcoming another great guest to the #ForzaFriday couch today. Jeff Easterling is a Halo Franchise Writer at 343 Industries, where he helps curate the canon of Halo’s vast and ever-expanding universe, working on everything from games and novels to comic books, live events, and more. He’s no stranger to our side of the fence though, as Jeff spent 14 years working in professional motorsports before making the jump over to the gaming industry, working with teams and drivers in series like IMSA, Rolex, the ALMS, World Challenge, and more. We last touched base with him in the Fall of 2018 to help unveil the Halo showcase event in Forza Horizon 4, so welcome him to the show today starting at 3 p.m. Pacific on the official Forza Mixer and Twitch channels."

#FORZAMONTHLY
  • "Last but certainly not least, we’re days away from the launch of the next edition of “Forza Monthly.” The show kicks off on Monday, August 5 at 11 a.m. Pacific. On the show, we’ll be checking out the August update for Forza Motorsport 7, recapping the Series 12 update for Forza Horizon 4, and more."

FM7 August 2019 Update
Brian Ekberg
Friday, August 2, 2019
www.forzamotorsport.net/news/fm7_august2019_update
video: Porsche GT4 Clubsport

Quote:
A new race-ready Porsche car and some eagerly anticipated improvements to Forza Race Regulations (FRR) are at the heart of the August 2019 update for Forza Motorsport 7. Arriving on August 6, this is the final update for Forza Motorsport 7, culminating nearly two full years of post-release support for the game. In the world of FRR, this update introduces FRR disqualifications for the first time. In addition, there are also some new goodies in the Forza 7 UI that have come highly requested from the Forza community, including interval gaps in seconds and FRR-related information when spectating races.

Let’s break down all the details of the August 2019 update, starting with a look at this month’s free car, the 2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport.

2019 Porsche #4 Porsche Motorsport 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport
The “718” moniker added to the fourth generation Cayman harkens to the 1957-1962 mid-engine Porsche racer that made its mark in motorsport history. This GT4 Clubsport is a true track-only competitor, so the rebirth of the hallowed development number is a good fit. This time around the simplicity of the original model gives way to the benefits of technology to deliver fast and capable results. For perfect balance, the 3.8-liter naturally aspirated flat-six is mounted amidships, facing backwards (when compared to a 911 engine) with the transmission in the rear. Weight savings is partially realized through a sustainable natural-fiber weave in the doors and aero. From nose to tail this is a single-seat, race-ready track car (complete with escape hatch!) from the winningest marque in racing history. If that doesn’t sum up what this car is capable of, there is only one other thing that will: driving it.

Forza Race Regulations: Disqualifications
Over the past few months, the rollout of FRR features has been the primary focus of the Forza Motorsport 7 development team. From its beginnings as a private beta to last month’s addition of collision-based penalties, the team has taken a measured approach to introducing each new aspect of FRR to the wider Forza community. That long string of Forza Race Regulations work in Forza 7 culminates here in August with the long-awaited introduction of race disqualifications into the mix.

With the August 2019 update, players in FRR-enabled hoppers who accumulate a total of 12 seconds of penalties in a race will immediately and automatically be removed from the current race and be placed back into the Hopper Select screen. Players who are disqualified and removed from races will see a message explaining that they have been removed from the race. After accumulating 10 seconds of penalties in a race – the game will note that players have been placed in “Probation,” a warning state before disqualification at 12 seconds of penalties. Once disqualified, that player is able to matchmake for a subsequent race.

The 12-second time accumulation is the result of a great deal of in-house testing from the Forza 7 team, who were determined to find a balance between a time penalty total that was difficult for well-meaning but lesser-skilled players to accumulate, while still punishing griefers or rammers who want to ruin the races of others online. A few caveats regarding penalty times and accumulations: First, because there is no way to reduce penalty time in a race, once a player has entered the “Probation” period (after accumulating 10 seconds of penalties), there is no way to reset that and remove “Probation” status until the race is complete. Secondly, once a new race is started, penalties are completely reset for all players in the lobby. Finally, players in private FRR-enabled lobbies will not have control over disqualification time thresholds. However, players can choose to disable disqualification in the private lobby race setup menu

Mini Leaderboard Interval Gap & Spectate in Ticker
A pair of UI improvements are also arriving this month, both highly requested from the Forza Community. First up, the Mini Leaderboard (seen in the lower left-hand side of the screen when racing) will now show distance between cars in seconds. The time interval will become the new default setting with the August 2019 update, but players can set the previous interval (feet/meters) via the HUD options menu. Forza Race Regulations information, including penalties and disqualification state, will now also be viewable in the Horizontal Ticker when in Spectate mode.

If you have feedback on the August 2019 Forza Race Regulations update for Forza Motorsport 7, you can send it our way by posting in our dedicated FRR thread on the Forza Forums. While the August 2019 update is the final update for Forza Motorsport 7, feedback from the community is welcome as the team at Turn 10 continues the work to evolve and improve FRR features for the future.

AUGUST UPDATE
  • Free Spotlight car: 2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport
  • Forza Race Regs: Disqualifications enabled
  • HUD: gap interval by time
  • August is the final update for FM7:

Quote:
This week has been bittersweet for Your Humble Community Manager. After all, this was the week that the final update for Forza Motorsport 7 was launched and, as I was posting the announcement of the August 2019 update here on FM.net, I couldn’t help but feel a heady mix of emotions – from nostalgia to sadness to satisfaction, and some that I couldn’t quite identify.

For me, Forza Motorsport 7 showed the best of what Turn 10 is capable of. From a launch that we can generously describe as “challenged” to where we are today in August 2019, this has been an incredible journey, full of ups and downs and tremendous passion and dedication from the Forza Motorsport 7 team. That focus, effort, and care manifested itself in a whopping 35 updates over the course of nearly two full years after release. That’s more updates than any previous Forza Motorsport game received by a fair margin, and those updates were brought to life in features that made Forza Motorsport 7 a more fair, fun, and complete game month after month.

Those 35 updates included foundational features like Forza Race Regulations and updated Track Limits, new drift features, and the introduction of Race Shop. There were community-requested features too, including ghosting of lapped players in multiplayer, Class-Based Time Attack, mid-race ghosts in Rivals events, the new and improved Paint Space options, among others. Then there were more esoteric additions that broadened the scope of the game – from Photo Mode Panning Focus Mode, the aptly named Experimental Drag mode, and others. Not to mention countless fixes and improvements that covered cars, tracks, audio, UI, localization, and more. I’m proud of the game we’ve built and even more proud of the tremendous work that the entire Forza team put into this game along this journey. If you’re reading this, I’m glad you were along for the journey too.

#FORZAMONTHLY RECAP
  • Elliott Lyons gave an update on the Forza Racing Championship. "Look for more information, including the announcement of the dates of the 2019 ForzaRC season in our August 27th edition of the show."
  • Q&A with Chris Esaki "talking about one of the “big ideas” of our next game: “Built, Not Bought.” (Fast forward to the 56:30 mark for Chris’ full remarks). How that idea will manifest itself in the next game is still very much a point of discussion and debate – as Chris also mentioned on the show, we are currently in “Sprint 2” of our development timeline – but it’s worth noting that viewers will likely hear more about this “big idea” in future editions of the show."

#FORZAFRIDAY WITH GUEST DAN GREENAWALT
  • "Forza creative director Dan Greenawalt joins us today on #ForzaFriday, where we’ll be looking back at the past two years of Forza Motorsport 7 development and looking ahead to the future of Forza. In celebration of its final update, we’ll be spending the full show in Forza 7 and of course, we’ll be answering your questions along the way. Join us on the official Mixer and Twitch channels starting at 3 p.m. Pacific."

Quote:
We are one day away from the start of the most exciting season of Forza Racing Championship yet. That means it’s time to drop some last-minute details about how the ForzaRC Invitational Series 2019 is going to play out.

Let’s Talk About Format

Format covers the nuts and bolts of the competition from week to week. How is the tournament laid out, how do teams advance through competition, and what cars and tracks are being raced?

The decision to move to a teams format was a huge one, and we knew it would open the doors to a whole new level of competition. Being the fastest racer on the field is no longer a guarantee of victory, and everything you think you know about these drivers and teams can change in an instant.

Tournament Structure

For the first six weeks of online competition (Sept 21–Oct 26), each show will be comprised of two matches. A match is three or four races, with four teams competing in each race.
The winner of the first match will progress to the second match. That means that, at most, seven teams will be competing in any given week of competition. Two weeks equals one round, where all thirteen teams have a chance to compete.

With us so far?

Match Format

Teams will qualify for the next match based on points accrued throughout a race. Points are calculated based on lap times and penalties incurred. That means the first person across the finish line in a race is not guaranteed to be the winner. They might have the fastest time, but once penalties are factored in, that may no longer be the case. Are you the fastest driver? Or the best teammate?

Here’s a breakdown of the points possible based on finishing position in each race, once penalties have been taken into consideration:

1st – 20
2nd – 15
3rd – 12
4th – 10
5th – 8
6th – 6
7th – 5
8th – 4
9th – 3
10th – 2
11th – 1
12th – 0

Points in each round are cumulative for the season, meaning that all the points scored in a race are added up to equal a team’s total, which in turn is added to their overall season total. These points will determine whether a team makes it straight to the finals, or has to compete in the Last Chance Qualifiers.

However, when a team wins a match and progresses to the next match in that round, their highest match score will be the only one taken. For example, if Team 1 scores 60 points and wins Match 1, then go on to score 50 points in match 2 in a losing effort, their Match 1 score will be the one that counts towards their season total and the Match 2 score will be ignored.

After the first six weeks of racing, the top seven teams in the points standings will advance to the Finals, while the bottom two teams will be finished for the season. This leaves four teams to compete in the Last Chance Qualifiers. Week 7 of the online portion will see those remaining four teams compete, regardless of their previous points standing, for the final spot in the Finals.
Following those seven weeks of online competition, the action will move to our live studios in Burbank, California for two-day finals event to crown the winning ForzaRC team.

Earlier this week, teams were randomly seeded to determine their race order. Every team has a chance to race every other team, and the competition comes down to skill and strategy, rather than circumstance and chance. No teams have a straight path to the finals. They’ll have to go through every other team to get there.

What is a Team?

Teams are made up of three racers and a coach. We’ve spent the last few weeks rolling out teams and rosters for this season, and the competition is absolutely stacked with some of the heaviest hitters in Forza racing. Given the level of strategy it takes to excel as a three-person racing squad, the role of the coach will be central to coming out ahead.

Coaches will serve as the point of contact between teams and race officials, as well as being responsible for wrangling their team of elite drivers and devising the best possible approach to every single race. Are drivers communicating and cooperating as well as they can? What driver starts in which position on the grid? Whose car gets the bonus modifications? (More on that below.) The coach is the glue that maintains team unity and dominance on and off the track.

Additionally, coaches serve as fill-in drivers in the event that one of their roster can’t compete, so talent on the track is a huge part of the job for any coach.

Now let’s talk about cars and tracks.

Car Divisions

This season, all racing will be held in a modified multiclass format, with customization and strategy playing a huge part. The various classes are defined by car divisions, as defined by Forza Motorsport 7. A week before every show, teams will receive a race packet with all the details on what car divisions are being used, and what tracks are being featured. They will then have a week to build cars in specific divisions that maximize performance, within strict parameters that have been laid out for them like Performance Index constraints, banned parts, and special bonus modifications, which teams can earn through skilled racing throughout the season.

This Saturday, you can expect to see ForzaGT vs. HyperCar vs. ExoticGT . That’s three different divisions of cars, and teams will have to build them in line with their resource budges, time constraints, and the strengths of their drivers. Every team must have one car from each division in their lineup.

The tracks for Match 1 are:

1. Circuit De Catalunya Grand Prix Circuit
2. Silverstone Racing Circuit Grand Prix Circuit
3. Hockenheimring Full Circuit

And the tracks for Match 2 are:

4. Mugello Autodromo Internazionale Full Circuit
5. Circuit De Spa-Francorchamps Full Circuit
6. Nurburgring GP Circuit

Per our seeding earlier this week on Alie Tacq’s livestream, Week 1 will see races between

1. Ryze Motorsport
2. Williams Esports
3. Lazarus
4. Fast Racers Forza

Followed by

5. Team Highlands Racing
6. Red Bull Racing
7. Raging Dragons Esports
8. the winner of Match 1

There’s a LOT of information there, but here’s what we can guarantee – a season of ForzaRC unlike any other, and an esports competition that raises the bar for competitive racing.
Will the heavy hitters dominate, or will smaller teams better navigate the new format?

Will drivers and coaches be able to cooperate, or will solo driving instincts kick in?

Who will excel in building cars to spec, and who will struggle to get it just right?

We can’t wait for this season to begin. We’re unbelievably excited to see how this Series plays out. And we hope that you’ll join us for every minute of the action, starting at 10 AM PDT on September 21st on Mixer and Twitch

See you there!

Forza Week in Review 9-27-19

Quote:
The one-year anniversary of Forza Horizon 4, the launch of the Forza Racing Championship 2019 season, a very special overseas edition of “Forza Monthly” from Playground Games HQ, and more! It’s a busy Forza Week in Review, so let’s get to it!

FORZARC 2019 IS A GO
"Williams Esports and Red Bull Racing Esports turned out some great performances during Week 1 of the Forza Racing Championship Invitational Series 2019, with solid drives from the likes of Mitch, Laige, and b0x. In any other season, we’d be only be talking about those individual performances but, this is 2019, it’s all about team racing, and results are judged by how all the drivers on a team perform. video: ForzaRC Invitational 2019 Series Week 1

While Mitch won four of the six races on the day, his Williams teammates Roadrunner and Seven turned in solid supporting roles, with Roadrunner acting in a defensive role, and Seven mopping up in the Number Three seat. Williams and Red Bull’s team performances weren’t just raw pace; they were the result of an excellent understanding of the rules of the game in 2019 – where car builds are just as important as talent on the track, and deciding how to allocate extra PI (not to mention the boosts available to players for performing certain feats on track) is a key element to winning.

Other standouts from the weekend include RDE Hydra’s wonderful drive for the Raging Dragons E-Sports team. Hydra was the only player running the Viper from the GT division and man-handled the Dodge with confidence. He’s shaping up to be a confident risk-taker and, oh yes, he also happens to be the youngest driver in the field, at a mere 15 years old.

Heading into Week 2 this Saturday, the second half of Round 1 promises some incredible racing ahead. After winning last weekend, Red Bull Racing advances into this round, and will be looking to bring home a better points finish than Williams’ leading 107 points from Match 1. To do so, however, they’ll need to get around the likes of heavy-hitters like Sauber Esports and JOTA, as well as the all-Chinese team of Mordor Game Club. Tune into to all the action at 10 a.m. Pacific on the Forza Mixer and Twitch channels to watch it all live!"

FORZARC INSIDE LINE
  • "If in-depth analysis of the ForzaRC is what you’re after, have we got the show for you! This week, ForzaRC analyst and all-around racing expert Mellish hosted the inaugural episode of “Forza RC Inside Line”, taking viewers inside the mindset of the ForzaRC drivers, offering tips on how to get better in the same cars the pros drive, and interviewing ForzaRC drivers like RDE Hydra. Mellish is a world-class Forza driver in his own right and, with the Inside Line, he’s looking to share his knowledge with viewers. In the first episode, Mel showed off how to drive the Porsche 919, which will be one of the cars in this weekend’s competition. It’s a peculiar car, one that best performs when gears shifts are kept to a minimum, and where upshifts during the middle of a corner (or under braking!) are often necessary to wring the last ounce of performance from it."
  • "Look for next week’s episode on Wednesday, October 2nd at 8 a.m. Pacific, where Mellish will break down all the Week 2 news and look ahead to the next week of competition."

FORZA MONTHLY LIVESTREAM
  • "Alie Tacq joined us on the couch to talk about the previous weekend ForzaRC action, and answer viewer questions about everything ForzaRC (look for that segment at the one-hour, 23-minute mark)." video: Forza Monthly

LIVESTREAMS
  • "With the ForzaRC in full swing now, we’re making a temporary schedule change to #ForzaFriday, moving the show from its regular 3 p.m. Pacific slot to 10 a.m. Pacific. We’ll go from 10 – noon until the ForzaRC regular season ends; though note that the October 11th and 18th shows will air at their normal 3 p.m. Pacific."
  • "On today’s show we’re welcoming Elliott Lyons to the couch to talk about the opening week of the Forza Racing Championship, and his career in videogames. Next week our guest will be Wes Eckhart, lead producer on the Forza Racing Championship. Great guests make for a great show, so be sure and tune in at 10 a.m. Pacific on the official Forza Mixer and Twitch channels."
