Hi all,

If you are experiencing crashing to desktop issues with Forza Horizon 3 on Windows 10, can we ask that you please read the the below information and current workarounds whilst we continue to investigate the issue:

  • Conflict with AV software causing the game not to progress past the Playground logo. Please try disabling or uninstalling your AV software.

  • Some players are experiencing issues when running the game with a microphone enabled. This issue is being investigated. In the meantime disabling microphones for Forza Horizon 3 in Privacy Settings should in some cases allow the title to boot.

  • Some players have reported that the title will not boot when the Windows automatic update service is disabled. Enabling the automatic update service will resolve this issue.

  • If the title crashes during the boot flow or the optimizing step try the following:
    1. Open “App & Features”
    2. Select “Forza Horizon 3” in the apps list
    3. Select “Advanced Options”
    4. Select the “Reset” button

Note that this will reset local storage for the app, so the save will re-download from the cloud, the optimisation step will start from scratch next time the title starts, and the graphics settings will be reset to default.

  • Players experiencing a crash on boot when running laptop machines with an integrated graphics chip should make sure that their dedicated video card is selected as the primary display device.

  • Some players have reported issues when running InputMapper. Running it in exclusive mode appears to fix the issues.

  • For PC's with integrated graphics, players have reported increased stability if they disable their integrated graphics card through the BIOS (not just laptop users, but desktop users too!).

  • Players using Intel Kentsfield Core 2 Quad processors may experience the title closing immediately on boot. These processors fall below the minimum spec and are not officially supported. There are no known workarounds at this point.

  • Players may find the game will not boot on single or dual core machines. These CPUs fall below minimum spec and are not supported.

  • try creating a new local user account
. Create a new user account on the PC though Settings -> Accounts -> Other People. It will likely first ask to create a user using a Microsoft account, but you'll want to create a local user instead using one of the alternate options provided (I think the option is probably "Add someone else to this PC" if running Windows Home or Windows Professional).
. Log out, then log in as the new user.
. Open the Windows Store, sign in with the same Microsoft account that was used to buy the game.
. Install the game from the Store - it should be a small download as the game data is already on the PC.

If after trying the above the game still crashes to desktop, please let us know in the support forum, making sure to supply the information requested below:

Hi, here are my step to fix the launching crash,

Before installed a new driver or to revert, my best advice are to clean all trace from it with DDU. (NOt mandatory but really a good advice)

Always use safe mode to be sure to avoid problems^^
--> Start DDU
--> Choose Safe Mode (Recommended)
--> Lower left "Launch" button will change to "Reboot to Safe Mode" click it
--> When in Safe Mode choose the "Clean and Restart" option
--> Read message that pops up and click ok (first time only)
--> When it is done it will automatically reboot back to Normal Mode
--> Install wanted driver

DDU works very well if you ever need to change GPU also.
--> Same as above except when your in Safe Mode choose "Clean and Shutdown" instead
--> Read message that pops up and click ok (first time only)
--> When it is done it will automatically shutdown
--> Turn off PSU and wait 15sec
--> Change GPU
--> Turn on PSU and start like normal
--> Install wanted driver

Make sure you have latest DDU :)

after i do a Modded driver nvidia 372.95

For my GTX 960 desktop card, DXDIAG reports that driver 372.95 is WHQL and WDDM 2.1.

It installed fine for me on Win 10, after booting up in Disable Driver Signature Enforcement mode, and using a modified inf.

The modified inf file I used is here:

http://www.mediafire.com...ze5jnq5lll/nv_dispwi.inf

It needs to replace the file of the same name in the Display.Driver folder of the desktop International version of the Quadro QNF driver 372.95 for Win 10 64-bit.

OR instead, here is the whole driver package I used, with the modified inf file already inserted:

https://1drv.ms/f/s!Al01JZ9_Z4n9luV-o3pDoVgxLIfwBg

It is for desktop cards and Win10 64-bit, and you need to boot up in Disable Driver Signature Enforcement mode to install it.

Standard Disclaimer: Use at your own risk. NVidia does not formally support installing drivers that have modified inf files.

Hope it will be fine now, keep me in touch

You see, these workarounds are fine, but...

What we need is a fix for these problems...
I'm sure many people understand that fixing issues like this can take a long time but it's been like 6 days

Yet, still nothing has been done (at least for the AV conflict and things)
Hope there's something to fix it soon...

Hi! Ive done 1 additional thing to make sure that the game will start and i was able to play the 2 Introraces in Game.

I unplugged all USB-Devices and my 2 optional Monitors. So only the Devices were plugged in that i really need to play. (Only one Monitor, a mouse and my XBOX One Controller is plugged in)
Also i unplugged my Oculus Rift CV1 and killed the 2 Tasks that belong to the Oculus Runtime.

Now i can drive in Freemode for at least 20minutes. But when i try to join a race, the game crashes in loading screen while loading "Drivatare" 10/11.

MY SYSTEM:

CPU: AMD FX 8350 Eight Core 4Ghz
GPU: AMD R9 290X
RAM: 16GB RAM
Board: Asrock Fatal1ty 990FX
Soundcard : Creative Sounblaster Z

Sry for my bad english, im german ^-^

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to share my experience trying to fix crash issue. I have a fairly high end PC :

Intel 6700k
16Gb DDR 4 RAM
GTX 1080 8GB video card
512GB SSD
Windows 10 Pro 64 bit version 1607

Basically everything meets the ideal spec for the game. After 3 hrs trying to get the game installed yesterday, I finally got it installed, except it won't start. The game gets to the Microsoft studios splash screen and crashes back to desktop, like many people here.
I've tried nearly every suggested work arounds listed around here and did not solved my problem. By accident, I rolled back the Nvidia driver, and the game said I did not have the correct driver. So I went ahead and installed the latest 372.90 driver again. Guess what this time it worked!
What's the difference? I have not enabled 3 screen surround. So yes, the game only works on a single screen. I was able to play for a good 20 mins at least without any crash. I re-enabled triple screen surround and boom, crashes again.

To the dev's please fix this problem for people running triple screens. There are more of them out there than you think. Forza 6 Apex runs just fine on the same machine with surround enabled. Yes it only displays on the center monitor, but it does not crash.

BTW, I tried the game on a different machine with 2 x Titan's, and with SLI enabled it won't work either. Basically I think the game needed to be tested a lot more thoroughly before launch. As it is, it does not support many different scenarios people may have. This coming from a Microsoft game , published for windows 10, is pretty SAD.

Try turning off Drivatar Designs in settings, see if that helps.

I am running it on an Apple iMac running Windows 10 via BootCamp (NOT a Virtual Machine)

i7-6700K 4GHz
24GB RAM
AMD RADEON R) M395X 4GB Video

I get an error regarding version of video driver (version number quoted in error does not even exist!!), I ignore it and it crashes.

This computer runs GTA5 at full 5K resolution, as well as xplane 10 at full res with no issues at all, so see no reason as to why it cannot run this!!

I don't crash at start up, I crash while in game.
Activating GPS, sometimes cut scenes, and going in certain areas of the map.
The putting on GPS will crash me 5-15 seconds after the use of it while driving this is a confirm for me and will always happen.

ALL the trouble started after I received my free Lambo SUV, and game has just had all sorts of problems. Someone has refereed to maybe the demo takes you this far... And then no resources afterwards, is this maybe the case? If not, whatever, moving on from the theory.

I don't know what to do, been working since 3am of release date, and I'm still crashing. My only two days off for another like 2 weeks. So frustrating -_-

And @ OP none of those are my source of problem, the issues I've talked about above have been from multiple people, why is it not there?

My PC isn't that great, but it is above minimum requirements as posted on via store.

Anyways, hope this is investigated, otherwise I am at give up point, and time to move on.

EDIT: Can you move this to "known issues" since I mistakingly posted here and would hate for the devs to miss this (if they actually check these forums for feedback). Thanks.

My Horizon seems to crash to desktop every single time (without fail) whenever there's even a drop of water (be it from rivers, rain, beach or whatever). I've exhausted every possible combination of settings (dynamic, low, medium, high, all options off, manual setting to low, medium and high) but it always crashes the moment the car hits any water surface of any kind. I've tried with default and with adjusting the nVidia Experience to max performance, 4 frames, single display perf. mode, no change.

I've tried DDU, fresh driver install, no change. No errors, no warnings, nothing, just crash to desktop.

Running on:
Alienware 17
OS: Win 10
CPU: i7-4710HQ (stock 2.5GHz, with game running @3.5GHz)
GPU: nVidia 980m
Drivers: 372.90
RAM: 16GB
Samsung 850 Evo 250GB M.2 SSD

When it runs, it's running at 50-60fps even on Ultra with no MSAA (only FXAA) @1080p, but it's nowhere near a smooth delivery (even though the fps counter doesn't move, the game plays as if it's fps delta is 50fps or something, completely unplayable). Locking it with vsync on 30fps is okay-ish, although this makes the xbox 360 controller pretty iresponsive (as if it's only checking for input half the time). 60fps vsync works slightly better, but the game stutters and becomes unplayable.

Does the game have a log of any kind anywhere that I could look at to see what's causing the crash? I'm all out of ideas. :(

I can run the game once. If it crashes or I close it, I can't run it until I restart the computer.

So far:
Using a i5-6600k and GTX 970 16GB DDR4, z170 chipset, latest bios
I've tried Nvidia drivers 372.90, 372.70, 372.95, 368.20, and they've all been equally effective. That is, they'll run the game but not long enough to get a handle on performance.
All audio inputs disabled.
Windows 10 Pro 64 bit anniversary update, even went so far to try the latest windows preview.
I've tried with and without Geforce experience installed.
I've tried enabling and disabling Windows Firewall
I've tried disabling IPv6 on my network adapters.
I've tried disabling all but one network adapter.
I've tried manually kickstarting the Xbox Live Game Save service in services manager
I've tried the same with the EFS service
I've tried enabling/disabling VT-d
I've tried resetting the app data for Store, Xbox, and forza itself
I've tried installing the beta Xbox app and starting the game from there
I've tried removing the game entirely and reinstalling it

After all that, the same crash, with the same useless "failed to initialize" error code in the event viewer.

i7 4790K
Strix OC GTX980Ti
SSD
32GB

H3 CTD ~every 5 minutes of gameplay. Message at startup says game expects graphics driver of 21.21.13.7281 or newer, what is this? I cannot find anything that corresponds even remotely close in regards to my GPU. I always choose the ignore and continue option.

it's because the game need to have nvidia driver from 372.90 or newer... Actually 372.90 do some problems

I recommand you to try my modded driver for desktop x64 372.95 and read the instruction in my post n° #3 a couple reply before yours

Also "Dxtory" and some other capturing and monitorin softwares will crash the game. latest (Beta) version of MSI afterburner works.

I have a Xeon X5460 (similar to core 2 quad), given that there was no info to say that these chips would not be supported before the games launch, i pre-ordered the ultimate edition (which i haven played any of). are there plans to create a patch so that they are? if not is there any way that i could get a refund?

While I understand that solution works for you, it won't work for everyone, and furthermore, that probably isn't what you want to recommend to casual users. Not to mention if it was going to be fixed by a future nvidia update, we probably would have had some solid communication from T10/PG by now, not just random suggestions based on what happened to a handful of users.

Got my problem "sort of" resolved. It seems that the crash to desktop bug I was experiencing is being caused by some unchecked memory leak that is triggered when the car is affected by any sort of water. All I did was switch to the bumper camera the first two races, played for several hours no crash.

Now I'm not sure if it was only that or the other steps I did as well:
1. Disable the Intel HD adapter via Device Manager (since I'm running on a laptop, it shares the workload with my 980m).
2. Install that latest windows update that had notes regarding the UWP.
3. Update my soundcard drivers and install the latest K-Lite Codec pack (I assumed that it had something to do with codecs since each time the game crashes at the initial screen (MS/T10 logo) you can hear a little weird sound before it closes out.
4. The video settings were set as per nVidias latest "experience" optimization, minus the motion blur and the frame rate smoothing. Left vsync off, ran pretty much the entire session between 45-100 fps (in the garage that is, during races it was around 55-65 max).

A little observation: When I was experiencing the crashes due to the water earlier, I noticed that the memory usage by FH3 was around 13GB (out of my 16G total). Now, while I was playing and the bug was nowhere to be found, it was around 4.4GB.

Keep in mind that the game still crashes from time to time, but at least it's now nowhere as frequent as it was before and random (drove around water/rain/puddles for like 20 minutes checking if this time it was really working or not).

I dont see why we need to uninstall a anti-virus system to play a game and the fact its not fixed yet is also quite annoying, granted i have uninstalled it to play the game but avast as saved me from some sticky times and dont really want to have it uninstalled.
