is it bad to use roll cages and aero to drop ratings down a bit to squeeze in a few extra parts? -- in older versions of the game, yes, now no. But, roll cages can be very helpful on older cars and aero is still necessary when extreme grip is needed.

why do better parts give worse benchmarks? -- this is rare, maybe for transmissions, but that's just because most transmission swaps add an extra gear so the default rear differential setting may be lower than stock. It can also occur on oil coolers because their weight may exceed their HP/torque benefits.

i don't know where to find the forza truth.... -- truth is in knowledge, knowledge requires work, works yields gains (hehe). The way to get started in tuning is only change one thing at a time, AND try to have a consistent driving style; this allows you to see the effect of the part or tune. It is also very helpful to drive 'properly'. This is difficult if you are young or have no idea how a race car drivers looks at corners, chicanes, etc. The best rule of racing is "slow in, fast out"; this is how you corner well. Just doing this well will eventually take more seconds off your lap time than a part or tune. Start with D class cars, keep racing ghosts until you get to one you can't beat, then pick a corner and just try to improve right there. Start just by using parts that don't require tuning but you have to know what the problem is you are trying to solve. Car really wobbly (Louts Elan) - use a roll cage. Always over-steering - try 'slow in fast out', then add wider rear tires, one step at a time.

It also helps to start out with cars you are comfortable using, cars that drive well stock vs. what the top 30 of the leader boards are using (sometimes they are the same, like the Mini Cooper). But, many top leader board positions are achieved with extreme tunes and extreme driving styles.

Actually, when you start feeling confident in the car and when you
are able confident in taking corners with the braking line is on the verge
of changing to red. This is when you have dialed up the grip level.
