Forza Motorsport 7 Track Wish List thread data


With FM7 just about a year into release, I've tallied up the community user requests in the FM7 Track Wish Lists thread and have the results here.

The thread started in February 2017, well before FM7 was announced, and just under half of the requests were made before the complete list of FM7 environments was officially revealed in August 2017. As of August 2018 there are 436 posts, including some none-list comments.

• 290 tracks or types were listed by 2 or more users, 147 were from 5 or more users
  
• Average 6.3 items per user list

Frequency of track mentions gives a pretty good picture of the community's interests, but not necessarily a complete picture. Some users may have assumed tracks were being carried over to FM7 and left their favorite tracks out of a posted list in favor of just highlighting new additions. Other users may not have posted at all for reasons based on other assumptions, or because the thread is an opt-in format rather than distributed survey. Ultimately 425 lists is a good sample but a small portion of FM7's full community of players. I do think it's important for the community to have a sense of what other users have requested, which is the main reason I've compiled the data.

Although this data is a recent snapshot of community interests, the information isn't new to Forza's developers. The community should understand that forum wish lists are one - not the only - source of feedback and consideration the developers use when deciding what to include in each game. When VIR and Homestead-Miami were added as part of paid expansion DLC for FM6, they couldn't be included in multiplayer hoppers because some players didn't have those tracks. The Nurburgring was absent at FM5's launch and was added the following June (free for all players) only after it took "more than 30 artists from around the world working to build the circuit from the ground up and putting in more than 13,000 man hours to bring the track to completion."^ Dan Greenawalt has said that "even in the 360 generation, Fujimi was the most difficult and time consuming track to make."^ "The Making of Bernese Alps" video from FM4 provides some background about how tracks go through the development process.

FM7 launched with 32 environments representing both licensed real world locations and Turn 10's original creations. Three of those environments - Maple Valley, Mugello, and Suzuka - had been in previous Forza games on the Xbox 360 and were rebuilt for FM7 after being absent in FM5 and FM6. Each Forza Motorsport release since FM4 has included a new creation, with Dubai as the featured environment FM7. There have been no DLC track additions to Forza Motorsport 7 as of August.

The Top User Requests

That Fujimi Kaido turns out to be the most requested track probably won't surprise veteran Forza players, but this might: when I looked at the FM6 lists, Suzuka actually beat Fujimi Kaido at a ratio of 7 to 6. Both tracks had last appeared in FM4, but E3 2017 announcements confirmed that Suzuka would return to FM7 so users requests for it dropped off. I still included requests for confirmed FM7 tracks for the record. Fujimi was mentioned by 95 out of the approximately 425 unique users, a rate of 22%.

You'll see the top 50 requests in the chart below, followed by an alphabetical list of 290 tracks/types appearing in 3 or more user lists. Note the strong interest in the top 5 most requested tracks followed by a more gradual taper. Fujimi Kaido is brought up frequently for its use as both an uphill and downhill technical challenge as well as a playground for drifters. And of course there's the location - it's followed closely by Japanese tracks Tsukuba and Twin Ring Motegi (both also last appearing in FM4), and Fuji Speedway which would be a new addition to Forza. Other top requests come from users wanting those icons of grand prix racing: Monaco, Imola, Red Bull Ring, Gilles Villeneuve, and Hungaroring appear in the top 20. Sentiments asking for "dirt tracks and rallycross" showed up in 30 user lists, followed by "hill climb", drag strips, and ovals representing non-specific track types.

Thanks for the analysis Max - can I ask, have you had to manually go through and tally up every time a track is listed or do you have access to some back end software to make your life easier? I suspect the 1st option is the case but am curious.

I looked at stripping the info from the thread but due to the "write whatever you want" format of the forums I decided that it would take just as much effort on the back end to edit out extraneous text and adjust for spelling etc to get everything to match. So I transcribe each request line by line on the fly. I use a validated list so it populates quickly, and I'm looking into a point-and-click method down the road to make it go faster. Fortunately tracks are pretty set worldwide. It's more time consuming for the car wish list - I'm up to a model list of 4000 just for FH4 - because I research each car requested to make sure I'm accurate. I'll post the FH4 cars in that forum at the end of the week and then get back to the FM7 car wish list later this month.

Must... resist urge... to start making up cars...

Can we send the tracks that belong in certain divisions to the person who makes the rotations so they actually know. Never seen Spa in the ghost league.

Jeez, Max you're a legend.

If Red Bull Ring ever made an appearance I'd love for them to have the old Osterreichring layout as an option (unlike Hockenheim/Spa/Sudschleife the old track is still there, and you'd just need a little creative modification of the modern track to accommodate it)

Glad to see so many of the forza fictional tracks in the top 50 list, I really miss some of them, I even recently made a tribute to some of them here. Sad to see one of my all time favourites (sidewinder) not very high up, I blame T10 for that one, making it day 1 DLC on fm3 absolutely killed it, as the track was never in hopper rotations or in career (because DLC) so the only time it could be driven was private lobbies (if all your friends had it) or free play.

It's an interesting list and although it's not a thread I actively participated in, I agree with the majority of the top 10 tracks listed.

Glad to see the love for Twin Ring Motegi.

Also, I don't think we'll ever be seeing Rockingham Motor Speedway now - the track is ceasing operations as a circuit at the end of the year, and is going to be used as a car storage facillity instead. A sad but not unsurprising end to a track that never really took off. Linked to that would be a couple of suggestions for stat collation:
