Forza Garage Week 3
Monday, July 31, 2017 (published August 1st)

Welcome to The Forza Garage, our weekly look at the 700+ cars coming to Forza Motorsport 7 at launch. A huge part of any Forza game is the chance to express yourself – whether you love painting cars with gorgeous liveries or creating custom builds and tunes that can transform a good car into a great one. This week, in addition to announcing a massive collection of JDM vehicles – 77 in total – we’re also turning the spotlight on the body customization options available to players in Forza Motorsport 7

For the first time in the Forza Motorsport series, we’re bringing wide-body kits to a number of cars in Forza 7. A select number of kits are completely bespoke and designed in-house here at Turn 10; from underground-inspired designs to aero-enhanced modeled after professional motorsport. In addition, numerous body-kit options from Forza Horizon 3 will also be available in Forza Motorsport 7, including Upgrade Heroes like the Nissan S14 and the 240SX SE announced today.

Wheel options will be abundant in Forza Motorsport 7. In addition to bringing over a number of the new-entry wheels from Forza Horizon 3, we’re adding a selection of new race-inspired wheels. Whether you’re building your favorite car for yourself or you want to establish your reputation as a master in the Forza Motorsport 7 tuning scene by sharing your masterpiece on the Auction House, now you’ll have more options than ever to build the cars of your dreams.

Includes pics and write up for the 2016 Honda Civic Type R and 2017 Acura NSX along with the reveal list and all previously revealed cars.

Can't remember if this is the right place for interview notes but here goes:

  • Dan Greenawalt talks to Shout Engine about Forza.
  • Interview took place around the time of E3.

  • Turn 10 staff = Microsoft staff.
  • Dan started back in 1997 on sports games and moved into racing games, starting with the Midtown Madness series, then Project Gotham Racing and finally Forza.
  • First 2 Forza Motorsport games were "high quality, but late", required a restructure for Forza Motorsport 3.
  • Forza's goal is to shape automotive culture for the future.

  • Car selection process: "Our goal is to spread our bets", give players a little bit of everything.
  • 3 types of cars to bring in: "Hero cars" (McLaren p1 etc.), "region cars" (popular Australian, German cars etc.), and the rest.
  • 9 months from sourcing a car to players getting to drive it.

  • Turn 10 gets CAD data from manufacturers when possible, and then scales down those CAD models to a more game-suitable standard.
  • Other cars are laser scanned and extensively photographed.
  • Material samples are applied under varying light conditions to help replicate them in-game. "Imperfections" make them more realistic.

  • Turn 10 have broken a few owners' cars during dyno testing (including one of a high-up person at Microsoft) when sampling engine audio.

  • For cars that they can't get dyno data for they have a vast database of engine audio from past recordings to use as reference.
  • Forza Motorsport 7 will feature driveline flex, which should be audible in-game.

  • Tyres are the most important thing to understand from a physics standpoint.
  • For the first few Forza games Turn 10 looked up academical records before starting to develop their own data in Forza Motorsport 4.
  • Different/older cars have different tyre simulation models, tyre flex etc.

  • Porsche were hesitant to give Turn 10 access to the 911 GT2 RS pre-reveal, but the potential audience figures of E3 made it worthwhile.
  • Turn 10 had highly-detailed access to the GT2 RS during its development. Torque curves, part measurements, factory visits etc.
  • "We've had a ton of leaks of our game content, but none of our partners' car data". Car data is highly locked-down in terms of secrecy and data security but once a partner is on board they're more accommodating in sharing information.

  • Laguna Seca is Dan's personal first reference point for all physics updates as he's driven it in the Forzatech engine for 12 years.
  • Laser scanning equipment includes point data, image data and colour data.
  • Turn 10 have a custom piece of equipment to help test how track surfaces affect tyres.

  • Project Gotham Racing was going to have a global time of day system so that if you drove at 22.00 in real life it would be 22.00 in the game. Idea scrapped due to players mostly playing at evening/night.

Forza Week in Review 8-4-17 with Toyota announcement
Forza Garage Week 3
Week 3 of the Forza Garage is here and, with it, we revealed more than 70 Japanese cars coming to Forza Motorsport 7, along with details on the body and wheel customization options that will be part of the game. You first saw the awesome widebody kit options in Forza Horizon 3 and I’m thrilled to say that, in addition to bringing back many of the widebody options that you loved in FH3, we’ve got new a number of new options that you’ve never seen before. In fact, there are new widebody options designed in house that run the gamut from underground setups to more race-inspired kits that I can’t wait for you all to see for yourselves.

Because we focused on Japanese cars this week, many of you noticed that Toyota was not included in the list. As you know, Forza Motorsport 7 will feature more than 700 cars at launch and our team is constantly working to license the vehicles that fans want to play. Unfortunately it isn’t always possible to align the interests of fans and the interests of our manufacturing partners. As a result, production Toyota vehicles are not represented in Forza 7. We’re as disappointed as you are about this news and, while we hope to bring Toyota production vehicles back to Forza games in the future, it is worth noting that a small number of Toyota race cars will be included in the game. Look for that list in a future edition of the Forza Garage.

  • ForzaRC ChinaJoy Invitational Recap: Winner ChicPizza will be invited to a future ForzaRC event.
  • Dan on Car Stories Podcast
  • #ForzaFriday 3 p.m. Pacific on the official Forza Mixer channel.

Forza Garage Week 4
Tuesday, August 8, 2017

Welcome to Week Four of the Forza Garage, where we are well on our way to revealing the more than 700+ vehicles that will be a part of Forza Motorsport 7 at launch. With hundreds of cars to race, customize, and explore in the game, this week we’re focusing on the “exploration” part of the equation. After all, every car in Forza Motorsport 7 features a full Forzavista experience, allowing players to discover each car’s unique characteristics in exquisite detail. Nowhere is the Forzavista level of detail more apparent than with car engines. Consider two fan favorites: the 2017 Ford GT and the Subaru Impreza 22B STi, both of which feature fully modeled engines in Forzavista for the first time in Forza Motorsport 7.

Two years ago, the GT debuted in the Forza franchise before it was even completed in the real world. For Forza Motorsport 7, the team at Turn 10 returned to Ford Performance’s masterpiece for another round of sourcing, this time with a focus on capturing all the magic of the Ford GT’s Eco-Boost engine and its intricate components. For the Subaru Impreza 22B, the team travelled halfway across the world to source a completely original car – including all factory stickers and zero modifications – giving players a rare glimpse at this beloved Subie. With Forzavista, details matter and we can’t wait for players to explore their favorite cars in Forza Motorsport 7. In fact, we’re making the Forzavista experience even better by allowing players to explore cars not only in our gorgeous pre-made home spaces, but also track-side before the race begins.

This week in the Forza Garage we are proud to announce a deep list of cars from America; more than 100 cars and trucks from as early as 1970 (earlier models were announced during Week 2). Whether you prefer classic muscle or the latest trends from Detroit, this week’s lineup will never leave you wanting for power. We start with one of the finest examples of modern muscle in recent memory…

Includes a pic and write up for the 2016 Ford Shelby GT350R (Xbox Wire article also includes a write up for the 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T) along with the reveal list and all previously revealed cars.

This week with Mechberg heading out for some time off you can also catch me on #ForzaFriday as well where I may just pony up and play some Forza Motorsport 6. Don’t expect the same level of awesome driving, but do expect me to make up for that with an awesome beard and a few giveaways. I hope to see you then!

Hoonigan Car Pack
Thursday, August 10, 2017

Forza has teamed up with motorsport-lifestyle brand Hoonigan to bring some of the most iconic Hoonigan cars to Forza Motorsport 7 and Forza Horizon 3. Fans who pre-order Forza Motorsport 7 digitally will receive Hoonigan Car Packs for both games at no additional cost (Note that players who have previously pre-ordered Forza Motorsport 7 digitally before today’s announcement will also receive the two Hoonigan Car Packs).. The Forza Horizon 3 Hoonigan Car Pack will become available on Aug. 15 for free in the Xbox Store for Forza Motorsport 7 pre-order customers, with the Forza Motorsport 7 Hoonigan Car Pack available to play on Sept. 29 for Ultimate Edition owners through early access, and Oct. 3 for Standard Edition owners.

This is just the latest of the collaborations between Forza and Hoonigan including last year's debut of Gymkhana NINE, inspired by the in-game stunts of Forza Horizon 3, and the videogame debut of Ken Block's 2016 Ford Focus RS RX #43 rally car in the Forza Horizon 3 Blizzard Mountain expansion. Today, Ken joins the family as an official Forza ambassador, and we’ll have more to share additional joint events and film projects in the future.

Here’s a sneak peek at some additional Forza and Hoonigan content coming your way soon:

Hoonigan Co-hosted Livestream – Join us on Tuesday, Aug. 15 at 2 p.m. on https://mixer.com/forzamotorsport for a livestream event direct from Hoonigan’s Donut Garage in Long Beach, CA. Cohosted by the Hoonigan and Forza teams, the stream will feature new gameplay with the Hoonigan cars and showcase a collection of the actual Hoonigan cars.

Daily Transmission – Ahead of the livestream, the Forza Horizon 3 Hoonigan Car Pack will be featured in upcoming episodes of Hoonigan’s Daily Transmission show. Tune in on August 15 and 16 to see Hert & Kado explore the outback in their signature style.

Climbkhana at Petersen Automotive Museum – Forza is proud to co-sponsor the premiere event of Ken Block’s highly anticipated “Toyo Tires presents Climbkhana: Pikes Peak,” at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles this September 24. Climbkhana features Ken Block’s 1965 Ford Mustang Hoonicorn RTR V2, which will tackle the 14,000-foot Pikes Peak in Colorado with Ken himself at the wheel. More information and tickets can be found on the Petersen Museum website.

Includes write ups and pictures of the included cars, and an Achievements list for FH3.

Defining the Soul of a Racecar in the Forza Motorsport 7 Garage
by Brian Ekberg, Forza Community Manager
Posted on August 15, 2017 at 8:00 am

This is week five of the Forza Motorsport 7 Garage and we’re bringing a huge list of cars to the game – cars that represent a worldwide sample of automotive excellence, with a particular focus on the best cars coming out of Europe. When curating this list of cars to reveal, we pondered the following question: what defines the “soul” of a European car? Some might point to quality, exemplified in cars like the Audi RS 4. Others will point to timeless design – think of the BMW 2002 or the Renault Alpine A110 as prime examples. What about incredible performance? With cars like the 2013 Caterham Superlight R500 and the 2012 Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series, drivers will never lack power and agility. Is it luxury you want? Look no further than the likes of Bentley and Rolls Royce.

Many of the cars featured this week have been bred from the most competitive and cosmopolitan race series in the world. The sumptuous lines of the Italian cars may catch your eye, or perhaps the unending search for perfection that defines German engineering. The automotive soul of Europe and all its facets can be found right here this week, all soon to be driven in Forza Motorsport 7.
Now, check out the cars of week five, starting with our weekly spotlight car which was once deemed “too fast to race.”

145 cars listed

Take a Lap on Some of Your Favorite Tracks, Reimagined in Forza Motorsport 7
by Brian Ekberg, Forza Community Manager
Posted on August 18, 2017 at 1:00 pm

Six in game pics, write ups of Suzuka and Maple Valley, the full list of 32 locations (including Test Track), and discussion of dynamic weather:

Xbox Wire wrote:
There’s no such thing as a simple “rain” setting in Forza Motorsport 7. Not for Sebring or the Nürburgring, or Brands Hatch, or any other track where wet conditions are available. Instead, the team has created a system that can smoothly transition through multiple weather conditions per track, and those conditions can (and often will) change throughout a race. You might start off with gray skies and fog on a track like Sebring, only to find yourself in the middle of a thunderstorm two laps later. The lights might go green at Silverstone during a light rain, only to find drivers in dry conditions by the end of Lap 2. As in the real world, conditions change and sometimes change quickly, and its up to drivers to react to those changes.

Those dynamic conditions extend to time of day too. Turn 10 is building on the sky technology that was first seen in Forza Horizon 3, capturing real skies that bring life, motion, and color to every track in the game. Check out the screenshot of the observation tower at the Circuit of the Americas against a darkening sky – one glance is all it takes to recognize a Texas sky at dusk. Even Laguna Seca – a track that has been in Forza Motorsport since the very first game; a track that all of us have driven hundreds, if not thousands of laps on – feels completely new in Forza Motorsport 7.

Whether you’re talking time of day or the weather you’re driving in, it all comes back to thatcentral goal: every race should feel unique. When you’re playing through the Forza Driver’s Cup single player campaign, you’ll experience that first-hand. Take a race at a track like Silverstone as an example. Maybe the first time you play it, you’ll battle the elements in a typical British downpour. Go back and revisit that same race in campaign, your conditions may be completely different; in fact, you may not encounter rain at all. The developers at Turn 10 have introduced probability into the various race conditions scenarios; meaning that there is a percentage chance that the weather conditions might (or might not) change. One race, things will go from bad to worse; the next time around, conditions might stay in your favor. It’s that element of chance – and the need to prepare for whatever the race throws at you – that promises to make racing in Forza Motorsport 7 so exciting.
