The backfire is not something you can tune for, it's random.

Backfires happens at full boost in this game. You get to full boost let go of he has for a split second and quickly squeeze the throttle again to rev back to full boost. That low pressure between full boost will make a vacuum causing it to backfire. Turbos mainly effect this. Exhaust helps. So sport exhaust and and a turbo and you should start seeing it.

The perfect gear ratio for your drive style will help. You want to stay in powerband to get full boost but keep them as close as possible so you can get more gear shifts in with out messing up your cornering. Each time you shift it will back fire in powerband.
