We don't yet have a full map but here's what has been shown as far as the environment in Forza Horizon 3.

gamescom update: see post #140 and #149 for the scale of the map and pink lake features shown in new gameplay footage:

Per the official announcement, we know that Forza Horizon 3 takes place in Australia.

Quote:
The Land Down Under
In Forza Horizon 3, Australia is the home of the Horizon Festival. As one of the most beautiful and varied countries in the world, Australia makes the perfect setting for Forza Horizon 3 and the team at Playground has translated the Land Down Under into the largest and most diverse open world ever seen in the Forza Horizon series. Just like the real place, the Australia of Forza Horizon 3 is absolutely massive – in fact, it’s is twice as big as Forza Horizon 2’s map. More importantly, Forza Horizon 3’s vision of Australia captures the spectacular natural beauty, the tremendous diversity, and the environmental variety that makes the country one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

Australia’s natural beauty abounds in Forza Horizon 3. From exploring bioluminescent caves that look like something out of a science fiction movie, to skipping across the beach and skimming the ocean surf as you speed past the famed “Twelve Apostles” limestone stacks, there are driving experiences in Forza Horizon 3 that players have never seen before in a Horizon game. Forza Horizon 3 is packed full of incredible diversity. There’s the famed dusty Outback that will be a test of any car’s abilities; blasting through the dense and lush rainforests; testing your driving skills on city streets – the unique driving experiences in Forza Horizon 3 seemingly never end.

Per art director Benjamin Penrose:
Quote:
“We have a bunch of unique ecotypes in the game that are all representative of real locations in Australia. We have rainforests, we’ve for the Gold Coast’s Surfer’s Paradise as an urban city environment, we’ve got sections of Coober Pedy, some gorge areas including Ormiston gorge, and some general outback loveliness. So there’s lots of variety in terms of environment that we’ve crammed in this time and they’re all genuine Aussie locations.”

Real locations

Though some named features are included from far inland Australia, most of the map seems to mimic the Southeast coast of the continent from Victoria (marked in red on the map) to the Northern border of New South Wales and Queensland.

On stage during the E3 briefing Ralph Fulton noted that the Lamborghini Centenario was driving the scenic roads in the Yarra Valley.

The map looks to be a merge together of the entirety of Australia, which will be cool. Yarra Valley and Great Ocean Road from Victoria, Deserts and out back from the western side (Northern Territory, Western Australia), at one point I saw what looked to be salt flats with abandoned planes or ships or something like that, which could possibly be South Australia. And then the city which is Gold Coast, up in Queensland.

As an Aussie I'm keen to know what locations are in the game. Are Melbourne and Sydney included? It would be weird if you could visit the GOR and Yarra Valley but can't enter Melbourne which is only 60 mins real time drive from those locations.

Some of these locations are thousands of km part so this game seems to take a few liberties with geography.

Locations included so far.

REAL WORLD SPECIFIC LOCATIONS

Wine Region/Forest Hill Climb | Yarra Valley/Black Spur - CONFIRMED
Beach Seaside Region | Great Ocean Road/Twelve Apostles - CONFIRMED
Urban Region | Surfers Paradise - CONFIRMED
Outback Region | Ormiston Gorge - CONFIRMED

GENERAL LOCATIONS
Rainforest (Daintree inspired possibly) - CONFIRMED
Desert sand dunes - CONFIRMED

I'll be disappointed if Gold Coast is the only city included.

Hope Melbourne is in there but it might be a bit too large to represent properly.

Nice view of the map but... the Twelve Apostles are several hundred kilometers from Byron Bay. Ha ha - just sayin.

Melbourne, Philip Island, Surfer Paradise,.... All this names sound good to me! It would be really great to have the real-life race tracks present in the game, like in The Crew but laser-scanned... and T10 can use them in the future FM7... Why not running Bathurst in FH3? I dreamed of Monaco and the GP track as location in FH2, sad it was not the case...

More "bridges" between FM and FH, as two parts of one big game, would be smart. Why separate this two worlds? With Forza Motorsport, Forza Horizon, Project Gotham Racing and Rallysport Challenge, Microsoft has all the weapons to make THE BIG PLACE OF ALL RACING!

So I guess this game is set in an alternate reality where Aliens descended and picked up the Yarra Valley, Marrondah Dam, Twelve Apostles and Great Ocean Road and moved them to South East Queensland.

I guess the French and Italians were thinking the same thing when they saw the FH2 map a couple of years back.

Geographically the Twelve Apostles being north of Byron Bay would be like if Forza Horizon 2 featured Warsaw Poland or Dublin Ireland in Southern France and Italy.

I've only seen a couple of screenshots of the city, and there was one shot with a monorail! The only city that has a monorail in Australia is Broadbeach on the Gold Coast (Surefers Paradise) in Queensland!

However, the Victorian Government are proposing to build a monorail network through Melbourne's CBD in the near future.

Now I might sound bias because I'm from Sydney Australia, but it would've been spectacular if Turn 10 had added Sydney's harbour waterfront around Circular Quay, the Rocks and the Opera House, where Sydney's spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks take centre stage in a beautiful harbour city! Imagine racing around Sydney's waterfront at night with fireworks lighting up Sydney harbour.

Seems there are quite a few Aussie members here on the forums. I would never have guessed there were so many. (Aussie myself).

The city is Surfers Paradise. You can identify buildings like "Circle on Cavill" and "Q1" in the screenshots. However the Monorail in the screenshots is a few km South of Surfers Paradise in Broadbeach as you correctly pointed out. It runs between Broadbeach and Jupiter's Casino.

Maybe they'll make a Melbourne or Sydney DLC like Storm Island. Unlikely though. Both of Australia's major cities are far too large to be accurately depicted.

Gold Coast is a good candidate because it's a relatively simple layout. Also it has an Indy race. As a former resident of the GC I'm interested to see how it turns out in the game.

Would love to be able to drive through the Melbourne CBD and then onto the Albert Park lake for a blast around the Formula 1 circuit.

From a few leaks here and there, we can 100% confirm the following places on the in-game map. (CAPITALS are enlarged on the map, lower case is for those smaller areas on the map).

BYRON BAY
Coober Pedy
DRY RESERVOIR
Great Ocean Road
KIEWA VALLEY
Maroondah Dam
Maroondah Falls
Maroondah Reservoir
Morton Timber Mill
Pink Lakes
RAINFOREST
Redstone Airport
Redstone Gold Mine
SURFERS PARADISE
Silver Sands Shipwrecks
THE TWELVE APOSTLES
Westpoint Tower
YARRA VALLEY

However there is still a fair portion missing which I believe is still yet to be shown until the release in terms of the map. Would even be better if they added Mount Panorama (Iconic Australian Circuit) in the map as it is a road after all, not a closed racing circuit as some people forget (I live in Bathurst, where the track is located).

There appears to be a mountainous region also.

Great Alpine Road? Or maybe a fantasy Mt Kosciuszko

Strategically cut off if you ask me.... as its half the Gold Coast Street Circuit showing... A famous V8 Supercars Circuit (Australia Racing).

Old INDY layout roughly...

Yeah, it's very hard for me to imagine them setting the game in Australia and leaving the opera house out!
