FM6 Car Wish List Thread counting project

Over the past four months I’ve been working on tallying the number of requests for each car model posted in the Forza Motorsport 6 Car Wish List thread. With the release of the Porsche Expansion pack and Meguiar's Car Pack in March I figured it’s time to share my data. (As of this post I’ve recorded about 95% of the request lists. I’m confident the proportions will remain the same after I’ve ‘completed’ the project and update this thread in the next few days.)

I eyeballed each post and recorded each item requested in one of three categories: specific production model, specific race spec model, or non-specific car type. In this thread I've posted charts of the total counts for models, manufacturers, and countries, along with lists of the top 100 cars in their respective categories. I'm cleaning up a spreadsheet to compare these cars with the models that have appeared throughout the Forza series and will post that link for everyone to view soon.


Summary:

• Roughly 2,800 unique users posted lists ranging from 1 to 650 cars each
  
• Over 2,300 production models adding up to over 14,000 requested cars
  
• Over 480 race spec models mentioned totalling over 1,700 requests
  
• A tie between the two most requested production car models
  
• Most requested production cars: Nissan S14 and BMW i8
  
• Most requested race spec cars: Porsche 919, Porsche 917 and Sauber C9
  
• Most requested general types: Tuning house customs, concept cars, DTM series
  
• The most requested car model is mentioned at a rate of roughly 1 out of every 20 lists and 1 out of every 100 cars (1%. All cars are in the minority.)

Patterns
A user's wish list provides some interesting insight into both the individual and the community as a whole, much like a person's taste in music. It's probably true that users basically want three cars first: the one they first drove in real life, the one they drive now, and the one they wish to drive in the future. Some lists focus on a particular manufacturer or country. Some favor performance while others favor design. Some are interested in cars that are hot in popular culture, while others clearly want to experience rare or obscure models. Car requests ranged from the dawn of the automobile to brand new releases, city cars to offroad behemoths to landspeed record holders. I took each request seriously because everyone has a reason for requesting a particular model. From the most requested cars, here are some similarities among models:

• Previously in Forza: Nissan S14, Lamborghini Sesto Elemento, Mazda RX-7, Gumpert
  
• New and new to Forza: BMW i8, Ferrari 488, Acura NSX, Porsche 918 and 991
  
• The fastest: Koenigsegg One: 1, Dodge Challenger/Charger Hellcats, SSC Tuatara
  
• Inspired by the movies: W Motors Lykan Hypersport, Aston Martin DB10 and Jaguar C-X75
  
• Trucks and SUVs: Ford SVT Lightning, Ram, Silverado, Colorado, Mercedes G63 6x6
  
• Track models: Ferrari FXX-K, McLaren P1 GTR, Pagani Zonda Revolucion, Aston Martin Vulcan
  
• Updated models: Aventador SV, Ford Focus RS 2016, new Cadillac ATS-V and CTS-V
  
• Oddballs: Reliant Robin and Peel 3-wheelers, pre-1930s, commercial trucks, Thrust SSR

Collection Method - what I counted and what I skipped

It’s important to note that this data is not a perfect representation of everything requested in the wishlist thread. Given the long list of models and the various formats in which users identified them I had to make some decisions about how to display the results in a way that would both give a sensible impression of the community’s interests and minimize the project time as much as possible.

• Roster/DLC excluded: The wishlists began six months before the FM6 car roster was revealed. I chose to skip requests for cars I knew to be in the game at launch or from DLC as of February. Anecdotally I recall that the Koenigsegg One:1, Lykan, and TS040 were among the most requested cars in the thread. The Ferrari 488 GTB was the third most requested production car and the Porsche 919 was the most requested race car before they were added to the game in March.
  
• Trim variants combined: I chose to leave off trim levels in most cases and group cars by model generation using Wikipedia as a guide. High performance variants are grouped in with base trims (which some users specifically requested), and I generally don’t provide drivetrain or aspiration details. So for example the Nissan S14 includes requests for both Japanese and American market versions and Kouki and Zenki versions through its 1995-2000 lifespan.
  
• Tuner/Concept cars as Types: I chose to record individual manufacturer production and track cars but not specific custom versions by tuners such as Top Secret, Singer, Rocket Bunny, Callaway, etc. When a user requested four or five of the tuned unicorn cars from previous Forza games I recorded it as one vote for “Tuning house variations.” I did the same with manufacturer concept cars, with some exceptions.
  
• Vague requests: I skipped over posts that quoted a previous user’s list with “^This” due to the potential of it being an expression of agreement in addition to a previously posted list of their own; I just didn't have time to verify one-person-one-list for everyone. I also did not count requests for “All cars from previous Forza games” or “Every generation of Porsche 911” (a very common request) due to the absence of specificity and the fact that many previous game cars are included in FM6.
  
• Errors/Omissions: A significant number of posts in the wishlist thread were not recordable due to cross talk, engine requests, etc. I caught many duplicate lists from the same users, but there’s a good chance I entered duplicates from the same users. Given the small representation of each individual car model, and in interests of minimizing time, I’m comfortable with this error rate and feel that the results still give a good overview of user requests.

A presentation like this is bound to spark some feedback given how passionate users are about their favorite cars. I'll be happy to consider polite pointers on what I may have missed or could have done differently and possibly edit the results if appropriate.

Non-Specific Car Type requests

These types were recorded when the user did not request a specific car model, i.e. "More LMP cars." Two exceptions to this approach were tuner cars and concept cars. If a user named a handful of the unicorn cars from FM4 or other after market customs (MINE's, Top Secret, Singer, Rocket Bunny, Callaway), I recorded a single vote for "Tuning house variations." I took the same approach with lists of concept car models (with a few frequently requested exceptions listed below). This decision was made mostly out of concern for time, but also to focus on manufacturer cars.

I did not count requests for "bring back Saab!" and other manufacturers due to time constraints, but "Porsche" was certainly among the most frequent requests.

Requests for Tuning house cars led this group with 13.9% followed by Concept cars at 9.6%. DTM was the most requested race spec series type. Movie custom cars included iconic vehicles from Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, and Batman, while standard manufacturer cars such as the Mustangs from Gone in 60 Seconds and Bullitt were recorded in the regular production cars list.

Production and Track-ready Car Requests

• 14,081 mentions of 2,343 car models. 370 models were requested by 10+ users.
  
• 54 car models represented 25% of requests (35+ requests each).
  
• The Nissan S14 and BMW i8 were the most requested cars, each representing roughly 1 out of every 100 requested cars and 1 out of every 20 users.
  
• Requested models from Ford (7.8%) and the U.S. (27.3%) led the count by manufacturer (260 from 27 countries).

I defined car models by their generation using Wikipedia as a guide. Some users were very specific about the fascia they wanted while others provided no model year. Many users wanted the highest performance model of its generation, but other users insisted on wanting the base model. I made some effort to differentiate between coupe vs sedan vs wagon formats.

The number for the Nissan S14 includes requests for both Japanese and American versions as well as the Kouki and Zenki eras during its 1995-2000 lifespan. The new NSX ranks 8th as an Acura but would rank 4th if combined with the Honda NSX requests. The Ferrari 488 GTB was the third most requested car and was just added to the game in the March Mequiar's Car Pack.

Although I stopped tallying the Lykan when it was added as DLC and subsequently left it out of the count totals, it and the Koenigsegg One:1 were among the most requested cars in the thread. The Toyota TS040 and Holden HQ were also frequently mentioned.

Users have such a wide range of interests that no model accounted for more than 1% and most models amount to less than one-tenth of one percent of all requests.

Requests for Race spec models

Porsche led among the 488 named models. The 919 and 997 RSR and Jaguar XJR-9 were added to the game as DLC cars in March, and the Huracan Super Trofeo (which I grouped in with requests for the Huracan GT3) is available as a unicorn car.



That big grey slice is "all the rest of the models" that each accounted for under 0.2%

Top 100 Production Cars by number of requests

I separated requests for the new Acura NSX and Honda NSX, but if combined the one model would rank above the Ferrari FXX-K. There were other examples of sister models as in Opel and Vauxhall.

The format I used to record the data currently does not easily chart for models by year. A quick scan shows that many of the most requested cars were released in recent years, but some earlier models include the Nissan S14, Mazda RX-7 FC, Ford F-150 SVT Lightning, DeLorean, Ferrari F50 GT, Toyota Chaser, and 1967 Shelby GT500 (which includes requests for "Eleanor" from the movie Gone in 60 Seconds.)

April 5 DLC update
