Original post:

If you race in any of the R/900 Hoppers or Leagues that come up, you may already be aware that the 1970s Grand Prix cars are "blacklisted" from those rooms and cannot be used.

Given that these cars dominate the R/900 Leaderboards on most circuits this is understandable and ensures that those rooms have more variety in them.

Unfortunately however that leaves these cars with nowhere to be raced, unless a League shows up (which based on current trends is once every 7 months, or 30 weeks) or you arrange a Private session.

To the best of my knowledge, these are the only cars in the game that are currently blacklisted from online racing, as the compact D/400 cars have recently been whitelisted and are eligible for use again in the lower classes.

I think that's a great shame as these cars have many qualities which make them great for racing:

  • These cars have a lot of grip, particularly at the rear, which makes them easy to drive.
  • These cars are moderately fast and agile, which makes them well-suited to side-by-side racing.
  • As leaderboard cars, there are several great tunes available to suit almost any kind of driving style.
  • The 3 cars themselves are relatively well-matched, each having their own strengths and weaknesses.

So what can be done?

As mentioned previously, these cars are blacklisted from the current R/900 Hopper for being too strong compared to the rest of the cars in that class. Also, Leagues are typically only open for a single week (Can-Am is the first league that lasts an entire month, split into 4 individual segments).

If it were up to me, I'd have one of these 2 options as a new Hopper, to be selectable in addition to the current R/900 Hopper:

  1. Unlimited R-Class
This would be the same as the current R/900 Hopper but also allow the F1 cars to be used. The Can-Am cars can be faster on come tracks, so it might be interesting to see them do battle with the F1s.

  2. 1970s Grand Prix
This would be an R/900 Hopper where only the 1970s Grand Prix cars are eligible, similar to the League that was set up in the past. It has already proven to be a fun and enjoyable category with the potential for great racing.

In either case, these are amazing cars that drivers of all skill levels can enjoy. I hope that as a Multiplayer racer I can use them more often in the future.

Update

A new Hopper is now available for Multiplayer racing, 1970s Grand Prix:

  • Class: R/900
  • Division: 1970s Grand Prix
  • Tuning: Allowed
  • Collisions: Enabled
  • Damage: Cosmetic

Eligible cars:

As mentioned below, it will stay live for a few weeks or so. If there is enough activity it will become a permanent Hopper, it's up to us players to make that happen. ;)

I think option 2 would be my preferred choice. They are great to drive and deserve a regular place in multiplayer.

Would love option 2 too.

I'd love to see 70's GP back online. I was a boss in Lauda's Ferrari in Forza 5's 70's GP room. A bit of an oddity as I'm not good in R class at all and I couldn't drive Hunt's McLaren to save my life. It was just that one car. Most my online in F5 was in ABC's and 70's GP. Two things that no longer exist.

They should give us more freedom to play the game how we want rather than forcing us to play what they want. Bring user created lobbies back, games like this need that sort of thing. Cars like this would get some usage.

Good response so far it seems, if we get a few more replies then maybe we could pass the message on to RBW Triton :)

Agreed but that's something that would probably be a lot harder to implement as it's essentially a "new feature" again and requires new UI elements, bug testing etc.

At least with the 70s Grand Prix Hopper it's a relatively simple inclusion, much like the C/500 Hopper a few weeks ago. Depending on how Multiplayer is handled in Forza's backend it could even be a case of copying the old League's paramaters and porting them over to the Multiplayer menu.

I'd love to see them in their own hopper, but not reintroduced alongside other R-class cars. The problem isn't that they're faster around a whole track (they're not at the top of a lot of leaderboards now), but that they're so much faster and so much slower at different points of each track than other R-class cars, which just leads to lots more crashes.

Not all cars were whitelisted. The '65 Cooper S is still forbidden from lower class hoppers.

I'm glad they aren't in the hoppers these cars are the reason I never ran R in FM5.

Hence why I think they should have their own Hopper, as right now they can't be used at all.

Sign me up for option 2....but as stated above, a lot of the variety we used to have online is gone.....very streamlined, like the career

a very good post PJ. Option 2 sounds like the most reasonable :-)

I genuinely enjoy racing all 3 of these cars. The McLaren is great fun, and the Lotus is a firm favourite as I once had a Scalextric car like it when I was younger.

Looks like this is the majority opinion in this thread on which kind of Hopper would be most suitable.

I've sent a message to a few Turn 10 people, hopefully something comes of this as these cars deserve to be raced :)

I'd definitely love to see option 2. I really enjoyed racing these in Forza 5.

Was there a dedicated Hopper for these in Forza Motorsport 5? I skipped that game and went straight to 6.

No, 5 was pretty much like 6; they started off legal in R-class lobbies then got blacklisted after a couple of weeks and vanished from multiplayer.

Below are some tips I posted when this was run as a League, they should still apply here:

The 70s Grand Prix League has been fun so far in Pinnacle Division, plenty of good races this week. Here are some tips based on the few nights I have played (currently sitting Top 20 in the leaderboard):

Quote:
The Lotus and Ferrari are both good all-round cars, with the Lotus being better on the straights. The McLaren's okay but slower overall.

The most effective way to race these (in my eyes at least) is to treat them like large go-karts. Dial out some of the inherent understeer in the tunes and don't be afraid to slide the car into corners as the rear tyres can handle it. I've shared a setup for the Lotus that I use on every circuit.

If you're using Manual w/Clutch there's a chance you'll stall the engine off the line, especially in the Lotus. To prevent this floor the throttle on launch and repeatedly press the clutch until you're moving.

Using the Chase Far camera's a big help as you can see all 4 wheels of your car, and prevent "interlocking tyre" incidents with other cars. If you and another car interlock and make contact, you're guaranteed to go off-track.

On street circuits you can't get away with glancing the barriers like you would in a normal car. As the rear of the car is wider than the front any contact with the wall will "suck you in" and bring you to a near stop before you can recover.

There will be crashes at Turn 1. Slow to 40mph and tip-toe around them at half throttle.

All I had to do was post in a constructive manner, make a fair case and hope that enough people agreed :)

Yes there was but it wasn't around for long. Never understood why they didn't keep it as it was always well populated and the race's weren't filled with wreckers. I think it was only around for a few weeks then they changed it for something else.

Hopefully this one sticks around, I know I'll be spending a lot of time in it anyway.
