1985 HDT VK Commodore Group A looks like the car. Default tune on a 500 HP build and I gained almost 1.5 sec!

Now to tune it and see if I can wrestle the "Golden Wheel" from Coopracing.
Crash

*EDIT* Down to 2:06.123 - still running a default setup. Plenty of dirty 2:05.6's

I've got bored of dirty laps through the Corkscrew and chicane at the end of the second straight so calling it a week. Final time of 2:10.394.
See what Wednesday brings.

Am I the only one that sorta likes Yas? Full Corkscrew's not my favorite layout (gets a bit samey with two functionally identical straights followed by two functionally identical left-right chicanes), but it's not terrible.

Anyways, tried a few minor variants on the build, made a few more adjustments to the setup. Chassis bracing slightly improved the feel of the car, but had a measurable negative impact on lap times. I did go with the Street cooling upgrade, as it puts the car at a nice round 565 horsepower and 2830 lbs. Uploaded as HLC28 Yas v1.2.

Current best: 2:08.4xx

I'll probably be able to get into the mid-2:07s with it, and I suspect the car's capable of a lot more. I'm kinda terrible at Yas (despite the fact that I like it), and the track modeling oddities (ex: Schtumpkurve) aren't helping.

I set a time of 2:08.553 in the HDT Commodore. Not sure if I'll get a chance to do more laps. Have a good one! :-)

Raised the front ride height a tiny bit and stiffened the springs a modest amount. Looked like most of my curb-bouncing was happening on the front, so I figured a bit more travel and a bit more cush might do it some good. Also decided to try a less-flat spring frequency (currently at 2.45Hz F/ 2.48Hz R) to give it a bit more squat under throttle, rejiggered the F/R ARB balance a bit to compensate, and hit the track. Seemed to work out OK. The car's a little more forgiving over the Turn 2 Invisibump and the off-camber curbs (which I'm pretty sure is every apex on the track), and a little easier to control when it does get loose. Setup is uploaded as HLC28 Yas v1.3, and I'm pretty sure it'll be the last.

Current best: 2:07.961

I've come to the conclusion that a lot of the issues I'm having with the car stem from me being a little (OK, a lot) overzealous on the throttle. Used to rear-heavy, lower-power cars where you kinda aim them in the general direction of track out and just kick the thing like it stole your wallet. Started working on using a less stompy approach to throttle control on the last few laps and the car seems to respond much better. If I can get a few more laps of practice in I may be able to hit that mid-2:07 benchmark.

....My learning as well, throttle control is CRITICAL with this particular combo (lack of rear tire width along with track conditions), especially during power-on. Many times almost completely off-throttle and to my surprise pass my ghost.

Yas Corkscrew is yet another tough track, where clean laps can be at a premium. Our concerns over the competitiveness of the Early Sport Touring cars, however, proved groundless, with a number of the cars capable of running top 10 times. The '85 HDT VK Commodore was probably the best of the bunch on this track, and was most popular, but the BMW M3s pushed it hard.

Another good week for PRKid, who claimed his second consecutive win, from Bassman, and Bubba, all three of whom claimed top 10 spots. EZT CHRONIC deservedly gains promotion to Tier 1 with an excellent 4th position. Mr Pinstripes had a good run in the M-B 300 SEL to win Tier 3 comfortably from SnowmansDad1.

Congratulations to all our winners.

Here is a snapshot of the final standings:

Our winners:

Tier 1: HLR PRKid wins a paint for his 1985 HDT VK Commodore.

Tier 2: EZT CHRONIC wins a paint for his 1985 HDT VK Commodore.

Tier 3: Mr Pinstripes wins a paint for his 1972 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3.

Tuners Prize: HLR Bassman wins a paint for his 1985 HDT VK Commodore.

To claim your paints, message HLR Moss to arrange it's sharing whilst you are waiting in the car to download. We don't want anyone else to grab them. They are each personalised for the winner and hopefully will provide you with a memory of the event.

For our next challenge we are off to Virginia to drive some modern hot hatchbacks. Good luck!

Looking like I'm in an Abarth née Fiat Punto for this one. If Peugeot hadn't absolutely butchered the styling of the 308 I may have gone with that instead, but that thing's hideous. Far cry from the 206, which is probably the best-looking hatchback ever made. Big draw (for me) for the Fiat is you can get it down to 48% front weight distribution with the appropriate bits and bobs. Might be able to hit 47% with the stock motor, but I hate turbos so that's out of the question. Current test mule is at a nice 50/50, but I may deviate from that in either direction if the car demands it. Trying to keep the stock wheels, as I suspect any of the aftermarket ones will look out of place. Rest of the build should be standard fare; no aero, tunables, etc. Haven't driven it yet; will edit when I get some laps in.

==

Edit to add:

Out of the box I think the Punto is probably the best-driving build I've ever done. It does exactly what it's told with aplomb and precision. Running a Honda I4/RWD swap on Race rubber. I did try the (Nissan?) V6, but the extra power and Street tires masked (not destroyed, mind you) the sublime handling of the initial build, so it got scrapped pretty quick. Not to mention it sounds worse. Setup uploaded as HLC29 VIR v1.0 if anyone wants to take it for a spin. Doubt it'll be competitive without aero, but it's surprisingly fun.

Updated current best: 1:14.403

Also, VIR is a great track, and I absolutely cannot understand why people hate on it so much. Every layout has its own interesting character, and they're all engaging and challenging. Plus it's pretty. Good combo this week, I think.

Alright... confession time......

I NEVER drove VIR South before last nite and so have a bit of curve sitting in front of me. With that out of the way, I built a hard and fast version of the Abarth 695 last nite for my BM (forgot the time though). Going to give another few cars testing today before yardwork after lunch. Don’t know what I’ll end up in but the Force will guide me.... 🧐
