New FIA Rules Will Allow Production-Based Hypercars to Race at Le Mans

  • The FIA has announced a new “Hypercar” designation for the LMP1 class, the highest category of the World Endurance Championship, as part of the 2020 Technical Regulations.

The FIA explains the new designation as follows:

  • A budget target of one-quarter of current LMP1 budgets
  • Freedom of design for brands based on a “Hypercar” concept
  • There’s also a plan to encourage the participation of female drivers in the FIA World Endurance Championship
