I made this because this was what I wanted to visualize when I came on here...see what pieces were used to do what...
This is not a standard guide but the pieces I use most and why I use them. I do randomly use other pieces, but as I said earlier, these are my most used. I hope someone new will find it useful when they start designing.

-6: Use for backgrounds, basic shape building
Use for ears, jaws, some oval work that includes sides of faces
Use for covering up whites of eyes and sides of faces, outlining
 Use for whites of eyes
Use for outining or small fill-ins

NOTE on Gradients: Make sure to set your transparencies lower if you are going to overlap many pieces. Even a gradient with a level of just 5 is going to show up on your car and in pics, so don't be afraid to set them lower.
 Use for up shading
-13: Use for shading in hard to reach spots, like under the eyes, or in areas where you need that slower color change
Use for eyes, pupils and highlights. Also used as a main shape for straight lines, shading, highlights...this is by far my most used shape...use this one lots! This one is great for highlighting hair...just make sure to blend it well and also use a stringy shape to lay over it that matches the main haircolor...gives it that more polished look.
Use for shading/highlighting only one half of a circular or oval area
Use for lighter shading/highlighting - not so dense in the center, however, can leave a smaller darker circle area if not careful
Use for outter Iris and layer for center iris colors...also use as a top white color set with low transparencies to give it the rounded central eye look.
Use this shape to add shading/highlights to areas that needs a more subtle sides than the gradient triangle.
Use for the color bursts in the more detailed eye...I usually use 2 with them rotated so the points don't overlap. Usually leave transparency up to 100%
Use for the color bursts in the less detailed eye...I usually use 2 with them rotated so the points don't overlap. Usually move the transparecy up or down depending on the look the eye needs.
Use for shading/highlights in hair...lighter hair color seems to work better..or black and white.
My favorite flames because they are gradient already - but the other flames that are solid are great also, but these are by far my favorite to use.

-25: Use these for hair pieces

-30: Use for eyebrows - misc grass, tree leaves...especially when it's black and white
-35: Use for hair pieces, especially near hairline.
-38: Use for tree trunks, splotchs - misc uses, but becareful...they don't like to be transparent.

 Use for hair pieces

Use for texture and freckles, gives a more mottled effect, can set transparency but again becareful how you overlap them.
Use for texture and different effects, transparency set with overlap does some cool things with this shape...

 Use this for straight lines

Use for curves and semi-straight lines. Is useful for doing outline drawings.
