FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
You'd think the argument of front-wheel drive versus rear-wheel drive
configuration is pretty much a no-brainer, right? After all, any car
freak worth the octane in his gas tank will tell you that RWD is the
ride of auto enthusiasts. Or is it? A recent conversation with Turn 10's content
coordinator and resident rally race driver, Roger Jackman, has inspired us to
revisit the age-old automotive question -- which is better: RWD or FWD? Although
there probably isn't a definitive answer, it's a topic worth some exploration.
Besides, this discussion is aimed at those of you Forza Motorsport
devotees -- do you prefer FWD or RWD (or even AWD) vehicles in the game? And why
do you feel that way? More after the jump.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
Well since you asked a rally driver I think that skewed your results. In rally a FWD is seen as better than RWD, the dynamics of rally benefits a car that can pulll itself through the corners and has the weight of the engine to help with traction above a car that pushes itself. An AWD system is better yet, but in rally FWD is better than RWD. But Forza is not a rally game so RWD is better than FWD for Forza.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
In the case of road racing I believe that RWD is better due to all those reasons stated. Besides Formula 1 would not be using it if it were not the best eh?
But In bad conditions and common everyday driving I think FWD drive is better.
Now AWD is kinda the medium. Off the line it is the best outta all 3, but in my opinion once moving at a good rate of speed it doesn't help much, seeing as how there is all the added weight from the extra drive train. I also believe that at higher speeds it isn't the best (at least in forza) because it seems to bring out the worst of the characteristics of each type. But it is definitely the best in bad conditions.
My car: 96 Corvette Collectors Edition. Also: 125cc "TaG" racing KART. 0-60: 4 sec 3.0 Lateral Gs.

I dunno, I found out the hard way that AWD won't help you on ice. ;)

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
RWD is the only way to go for performance. FWD is steering, braking, and turning, all with the same tires. AWD loses to much power through the drivetrain. All three are great for daily driving and it just comes down to preference. I'm sure everybody can come up with a best case scenario for each type, but for road racing RWD rules the roost.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
In real life, I drive FWD, but in game, im not able to do that because of my agressive driving. I drive a crx in real life, and its a lot of fun to drive. But I cant be at ease in game like real life. As for rwd, the only RWD I drove in real life was my dad nissan b2200. But on dirt road, it was quite fun (was a dirt road but it was a public road so I didnt push it).

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
AWD cars rock my socks off..... But, in real-life (not games) I prefer FWD. The reasons? 1) Steer in any direction and that is where the car is gonna go. 2) Good rally car (I go off-roading every week). 3) Safer in adverse conditions. 4) Lots of room inside. 5) Easy to maintain. 6) Good fuel milage. The bad things? 1) Wheel spin. On gravel, it takes the tires 10 seconds to gain traction when flooring it from a stand-still. 2) Buying tires. My rear tires look brand new. My front tires are wearing thin. I love FWD (all 3 cars I have owned in the past 4 years have been FWD as well) and I will continue to own FWD cars for the reasons that I listed. Either that, or I may get an AWD car instead. Either way, I will probabaly never own a RWD car because I enjoy dirt/gravel/ice/rain too much. I don't want to have to stay at home when the roads get bad. Ice is fun! FWD baby! w00t! - Tum

Isnt that a good thing ? You just have to change the front tire.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
Always preferred FWD, being brought up on games like ToCA. I find mashing the throttle when oversteering more fun than letting off like in a RWD. Plus I'm 6th in C class on Forza which is an FWD class.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
RWD dominates all. Second to that is AWD and last is FWD. If you look at the Lamborghini on the Corvette C6.R league it was switch from AWD to RWD.

lol, I'm assuming he edited the J/K in! As for FWD vs RWD vs AWD They all have their place FWD can be slow and understeer-y, and is pretty worthless with anything over 250 HP. But, FWD works great in something like a VW GTI. RWD is preffered for most sports cars, but, then if you have massive power to put down AWD is the way to go.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
In order to get the best out the RWD, the power to weight ratio, needs to be somewhat high. If i was going quartermiling, drifting or just having fun on a track, i would choose RWD. I know a RWD is great on track, but I would always choose a AWD if possible. A well "set up" car like a Porche 911 Carrera S (997), is hard to beat on a track. And it's VERY fun to drive.
FWD cars are not as fun to drive, as the RWD, unless it's a small track with a load of tight corners. I find it to be a benefit for smaller cars(like Peugeot 206 GTI, Ford Fiesta RS), to have FWD, since the added weight(from driveshafts in RWD and AWD) would destroy the performance.
AWD seems to be the best choice, but also depend on a somewhat high power to weight ratio, to counter the added weight. The AWD delivers massive grip, so it's hard to make the car drift or wheelspinning. Seems like a lot of supercar manufactures are starting to make the cars AWD, because of the better handling and performance. Just take a look at the Audi R8, Lamborghini Gallardo, Murcielago, Porche 911 4'series, turbo etc.
I hope you understand what I'm trying to say, since english isn't my main language! Best regards from Sven (Denmark, Scandinavia)
Now, give us the RUF RT12!
