    sixpackjack:
Hi, anyway back to the original question...........FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
RWD  will always beat FWD, no brainer.  End of story. Party!!! [<:o)]

That was quite an analysis there.  I'm sure you've swayed many minds with that.

Simply saying RWD will always beat FWD does not make it true, nor believable.

Perhaps just stating a couple little sentences as to why you think that would possibly make your post slightly interesting and time-worthy to read.

I just get the feeling that a lot of people just post these one line answers because they've heard other people they know have an opinion on it, and instead of having their own personal opinion about it, assume that their friend is right,  end of story.....

And in anticipation of being accused of 'wasting their time with a no-point post, thereby being ironically hypocritical', I will share my opinion on the topic.

I respect that AWD and FWD have their benefits.  But the crude way you really control a car in a RWD car is comparable to the difference between an automatic and a manual.  They're very different experiences that both acheive the same results.  One straightforward and slightly mindless, the other more technical and involving.  And in that respect, I would always pick RWD anyday.  The fun factor increases as your skill does, and there's nothing like some throttle-happy oversteer when the mood hits ya.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?

in my humble opinion, if your lucky enough to own to a wide low mr car they are the best for track use and in the game. For real life driving where i stay in sunny scotland i dont think you can beat awd.

On the twisty back roads there is nothing to beat hammering the throttle down, turing into bends and getting all that grip and awsome speed out the corner.

Awd rules in the real world but mr is proberly better for track, rwd for drift and fwd is fit for the bin :-)

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?

I would think that if you prefer RWD you are most likely to be able to control oversteer better. If you prefer FWD it would be the same case for understeer.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?

oh my god. What idiot started up this raging inferno of a debate? There are advantages to both.

I love RWD and thusly am biased but every honda and neon guy is going to jump in and talk about how great FWD is.

One is not better than the other at everything.

Let's just leave this one be already, ok?

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?

In lower powered cars, FWD is better. They have more direct power going into the front wheels, rather than wasting power going to the back. However, if you put FWD in anything over 200HP, you will begin getting a hell of a lot of understeer. Also, FWD is better in lower powered cars as there is less weight from the driveshaft etc.

In higher powered cars, RWD is better. You get less understeer, however you begin getting a lot more oversteer. However, understeer is a lot more controllable than oversteer.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?

i wud say RWD well mainly due to all the reasons tht have been stated before me......... yet it do AWD, as its a little bit different and gives you some extra grip. Obviously gives a lack of speed but then allows you to concentrate on gettin your cornerin right.... overall lol i jst think it depends on wat u get out of the car and are comfortable with it ....

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?

for touring cars specifically and 4 door sedans, AWD is a no bariner beacause you cant get a one way diffrential for the front (accelerates on power, but freewheels and doesnot slow down due due engine braking since it uses one way bearings)

Take a look at any modern hobby R/C 1/8 nitro pan car, 1/10 nitro or electric sedan, they all use AWD.  You can also use AWD to tune overdrive!

p.s.  (nitro = model fuel, a mixture of nitro, methane, and castor oil. most racers use 30% nitro for racing, and 20% for breaking in engines and running up and down the street. I can post pics of my 1/10 scale nitro sedan if yall want. full carbon fiber shock towers and upper deck, O.S. TZ12 3-port race engine with professionally modified crankshaft by the guys at E.B. mods, ufo type centrifugal factory team clutch, 2-speed centrifugal transmission, and Kyosho factory team drilled directional brake rotor, and factory team brake pads. also it has futaba digital brushless digital servos to yank the carb, brakes, and steering linkage.  By the way my car is a Kyosho V-One RRR World Champion Edition.)

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?

FWD cars to me are very poor cars to drive, I've just never really liked them. AWD cars are really fun to drive most of the time, especially on tracks like Road Atlanta, but I like RWD cars the best, I feel more in control then I do with the other two types.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?

good question.....In real life I'd say RWD, but since we're talking about FM2 I'd have to say neither FWD or RWD. I stick with AWD. Back in the day when I used the controler to play I was hands down a RWD racer. All my best lap times were with a NSX-R and of course a muscle car since you need them to compete on the leader boards on some tracks. Since then I've upgraded  to the Microsoft racing wheel and have reinvented my racing technic. Now the drivetrain of choice is AWD. Yeah the turning is a little hampered but, it makes up for it in acceleration out of the turns. So I'm for AWD all the way.

    I love NISSANS!!!!!!

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?

Yeah I still use a controller so I prefer RWD, and beacuse I drift. However AWD is great too for driving outside of fm2.

?I dont really like FWD though, it has no advantages to me, nor is it my preferance.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?

RWD for drifting, alot more power to the rear wheels makes it easier to lose traction

FWD just cant put the power down, FWD is for grannys lol, unless its a rally car

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?

I don't know where you have studied physics or drive dynamics but here a few tidbits of information.

FWD has always been known for having UNDER STEER. Definition, the car has a tendency to travel along the same path it is traveling in a hard turn. This is due to the fact that the engine mounted slightly forward of the front wheels. So it WILL NOT always Steer in any direction and that is where the car is gonna go.’

RWD on the other hand has the engine either on top of or just behind the front wheels. It also has the drive train spread over the length of the car, which reduces the inertia put on the vehicle. This causes a tendency toward OVER STEER. Definition, the car has a tendency to travel on the inside of the turning line.

AWD despite what everyone thinks about AWD, all of the dynamics depend on the setup of the vehicle. They DO have a tendency to a NEUTRAL OVER STEER. Definition, the car will travel on a wide line but at the same front to rear axis under extreme steering conditions. The way it all depends on the layout is that the vehicle will STILL have a tendency toward over or under steer depending on where the majority of the weight is located. Front will under, rear will over. Simple as that.

It has been widely misunderstood that FWD is better in adverse conditions. This can be misleading to say the least. An under steering car can be very bad if you are headed into a turn with oncoming traffic in the other lanes and there is a slick spot. I have been there and it is not fun at all. FWD cars will under steer in rainy circumstances much easier than a RWD car will over steer. The difference is that the front wheel drive vehicle is easier to recover, anyone who has been traveling a bit too hard around a corner in a RWD car will tell you that when you loose it, it is a very scary experience. All you have to do to recover a FWD car in that situation is take your foot off the gas. RWD is a bit more skill then that. AWD on a rainy day will tend to fair better bc the car will not favor one or the other to a huge degree so it will be more stable. One analogy I can offer. Load a lot over weight in the front of the shopping cart, it will be very difficult to turn and… UNDER STEER. Put the same weight toward the middle and the cart will steer neutral. Put it in the rear and it will steer very easily but have a major tendency to swing out. Cars are no different.

Racing: RWD, Daily Driving: RWD, Rainy Days: (Amateurs or heavy footed people) stick with FWD, (The experienced driver) treat yourself to a RWD car. If you can afford the premium on a rainy day AWD trumps them both.

pretty sure the topic is FWD vs RWD...

where doeas all this AWD talk come from?

Fast cars are fast in the straights, Fast drivers are fast in the turns.

    Handling > Speed

Hmm [^o)] Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?

FWD is meant for a few things :

    - to let inexperienced drivers keep the control. No matter how fast you enter the turn : the car will gently understeer...

    - to reduce steering angle (because of the transmission) so as your wife will spend hours in manoeuvring the car and you'll still be the boss (well, it's a French point of view : don't take it too seriously).

    - to make room for the luggage at the rear of the van : there's no doubt the boss is never the one you'd expected when it's time to travel (this is a general fact, this time).

    RWD is made to :

    - put weight to the drive train when needed (during acceleration, at the same time FWD losses drive...). This also helps when braking (if you remind to be progessive).

    - separate the steering from the driving (better for feeling, performance and tyre wearing too).

On top of that, the RWD architecture helps the balance, by moving the weight on the rear side of the car. We all know the best sportscars (meant for racing or not) have mid rear engine : that's the reason why. And, strangely, I don't remind of a car who would have mid rear engine and front wheels drive. Yet, the opposite is true with the Panoz for exemple (mid FRONT engine, but rear wheels drive : it's all about weight distribution).

By the way : has anybody ever seen a decent FWD supercar ? Last, think about the bicycle evolution...

Yet, it's a matter of a fact that common FWD are excellent cars... My Citroën C4 is almost perfect on twisty French roads, has smoked a lot of powerful beamers in the Alps, and is very forgiving for drunk driving ( I'm kidding, DON'T DO  THAT). It's a shame that there are no Citroëns in Forza (look at WRC championship...).

P.-S. : Sorry for my poor English level. I hope you'll have understood the main part of my (attempts of) explanations.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?

It all depends on the driver and the car. I've taken the Chevelle on FM2 with only a trans, tire and clutch upgrade and smoked a Skyline around Nurburing.

And I have been smoked by another Fwd/Awd on the same track...

It's more about preference than what is better. My preference is RWD... I drive much better with RWD cars than any other car.
