[Guide] How to Improve Photomode Image Quality

*** Gallery for the images you create: http://forums.forzamotorsport.net/forums/thread/3161350.aspx***

*Picture and Video Tutorial Coming soon*

I've found a way to get great quality images out of photomode! If you take zoomed in shots and stitch them together afterwords, it'll make a high quality large picture. I'll try and post a tutorial if people are interested. When viewing the photos full size, I suggest comparing the Lotus logo, you can really see the difference! With this method you can make desktop wallpapers, poster prints, or even a higher quality standard 720p image.

This image I went overboard and used 18 pictures, but I've also done this exact same photo with 6 pictures. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/brodelicious/4058315862/sizes/o/in/pool-1242354@N21/] I'd say 6 (3x2) is good enough for 1280x720 forum viewing. This 18 photo one is able to be super zoomed and is over 4000pixels wide full size. Of course it's all about stiking a balance between quality and time consumtion, But 6 is quite easy to do, and will make a huge difference.

    ****Tutorial****

    (will improve on it later)

The game appears to perfectly rotate around the center axis! This means that as long as you don't move the left thumb stick and only use the left, you can line up the images in any program including MS Paint.

1.Find an angle you want of your car, and zoom in as far as you can (20X)

    2. Move back the camera to a distance that you can fit the parts of the car into 2 rows of 3 images

    3. Take the photos and use only the right analogue stick to move the camera. Don't touch the left analogue stick at all. Start on the far left, and pay attention to how much area the FM3 logo takes up. You will cut off the horizontal bottom slice of each picture to get rid of the logo. If you move left to right, make sure there is a 25% overlap between photos. When you move up or down for the next row, make sure to leave enough room to crop out the bottom horizontal slice to get rid of the logo.

    4. Download the Photos to your computer, load them into a photo program, and cut off the vertical left slice of the image that contains the logo. Align all the images in a big enough work area and match up the features.

    or

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=free+panoramic+software  (Hugin works quite well if I remember right)

    5. Post it to a photo site like imageshack or Flickr

    Example:
Single shot taken in photo mode, comes out at 90kb, and has horrible compression. I found I can't even do contrast adjustments in photoshop the colour information is so badly damaged:

[Remember you can't see it in the preview, click on the link please!]

     http://www.flickr.com/photos/brodelicious/4055446557/sizes/o/

     Forza Bad

Now look at the stiched together image [Keep in mind I didn't bother doing a row of shots for the lower road, so the dimensions are slightly different]:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/brodelicious/4055446887/sizes/o/

    Forza Good
And since it has more information, I can adjust contrast and colour:

Here's a close up comparison for people who can't be bothered to download. The difference is amazing IMHO:

Then since everything is so crisp you can create some great compositions!

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/brodelicious/4058278559/sizes/l/

    Is this a good idea?

Look at the original images sizes and tell me what you think
    • Yes (96.2%)
    • No (please explain) (3.8%)
    You voted for 'Yes'.

I really like what I see! Definitely would love to see a tutorial!!!!!!!!  Difference is night and day.  How many smaller shots did it take?

Re: I've fixed photomode! (Or atleast found a workaround) Image quality rocks now!

I've done them with 6 images (2x3 rows), but for this one I went overboard and did 18 shots. I think for most purposes 6 should be fine. The difference is amazing on my computer, but the web previews don't do it justice. if you download the image and zoom in on the Lotus badge (or anywhere) it's crazy! We're talking 90kb vs 1.2MB

I'll get to work typing up a tutorial!

Sounds good!  I thought of doing this as well, just to make say a 1920x1200 shot or something. Just hate that we have to do this.  But the quality is much, much better.  Really looking forward to the tutorial!

    ^^^^

that is a big difference. did you use photoshop to stich them together?

and how many photos did you use?

I hope Turn 10 is watching this thread to see what people have to resort to in order to get their pictures to look good.

Wow! I advocate for a sticky! This technique definitely needs to be known to all, unless Che gives us the good news (i.e. photo compression eliminated)

Agree.  Used to do the stitching back in my GT4 days had not even thought of this in like 4 years.

Re: I've fixed photomode! (Or atleast found a workaround) Image quality rocks now!

Well Turn10 are doing the compression to save bandwidth, but if people start doing this method, it will be easier for everyone just to upgrade the file size to 400kb or somthing.

*or, if the issue is of people viewing the photo on storefront, do an option like on the video where you can do 720p or [forgot320?p]

Allow the high quality photo to be downloaded only by the user that created it for external hosting, and have the 90kb photo on storefront.

That way I can use lets say 1mb total of turn10's bandwidth downloading my image to my computer once. And if people still want to download from the storefront it will be 90kb*? = MB.

So there you have it, it would actually be more bandwidth efficient to let me download a 1mb photo once, and use external hosting to display it on the internet. [Compared to a photo getting 90kb*1000 storefront downloads]

He said good = 1.2 MB

Turn10 would be idiotic to allow us to upload 1.2MB photos to the storefront. Obviously T10 understands fidelity, and it's a balancing act between quality and bandwidth.

Wrong. I check the file size of the photos posted by T10, all around 500-600 kb. That is not a bad file size, and their servers definitely can withstand that.

Yea, I was saying 1.2MB as an example, 600kb would probably be fine too.

Did you read what I was saying though? I wasn't saying to upload them to the storefront, I was saying allow higher quality uploads to "My Forza" for external hosting.

    I quote:

Re: I've fixed photomode! (Or atleast found a workaround) Image quality rocks now!

I'm working on the tutorial, but for the meantime, here's a tip. If the game works like real life, it's best to shoot your smaller bits at maximum zoom. As you can see in the illustration below, the further away from the object you are, the less angle and distortion there will be. If you shoot up close without zoom and try to stich it, it will look sortof like a fisheye lens. [I'm pretty sure the game works like this too]

A 30 sec video clip is a 57MB upload, I would love the ability to upload 1.2MB photos and actually use them for wallpaper on my 1920x1200 PC!

It's only embarrasing for T10 when people are still posting 6 x 4 photos as that's the only way to get them to look good!

I sitll want to see your tute, but is what you are saying to do is to take 6 different photos of the car and join them up?

Not everyone would have the software or the skills to do this.

Yea, since I do irl photography, I have panoramic stitching software.

Update! since the game perfectly rotates around the axis, as long as you don't move the right thumb stick, the images appear to line up perfectly! That means even somone with microsoft paint could paste all the images into there and line them up. That's awsome!

Of course if you have photoshop you can use Auto-Align Layers

Since I don't have a high megapixel camera I use the same technique IRL. This image is made up of 30 photos:

Re: I've fixed photomode! (Or atleast found a workaround) Image quality rocks now!

    I've made a rudimentary tutorial:

    ****Tutorial****

    (will improve on it later)

1.Find an angle you want of your car, and zoom in as far as you can (20X)

    2. Move back the camera to a distance that you can fit the parts of the car into 2 rows of 3 images

    3. Take the photos and use only the right mouse stick to move the camera. Start on the far left, and pay attention to how much area the FM3 logo takes up. You will cut off the vertical left slice of each picture to get rid of the logo. Make sure when you move the camera to the right to take the next picture, that there is enough overlap to allow you to get rid of the logo later.

    4. Download the Photos to your computer, load them into a photo program, and cut off the vertical left slice of the image that contains the logo. Align all the images in a big enough work area and match up the features.

     5?????

    6.Profit!
