    [onboard] driving the ring...

hello guys (and girls), well I thought I'd post that video of my 6th lap on the ring.

I'm just a tourist there so still learning the track at reasonnable speed.

that day was very busy and tricky (several crashes, a few serious ones, tons of cars and bikes around the track), so I couldn't get any close to a "decent" time, actually I did the same time last time under heavy rain (12'3x" approx).

Next time I'll go, it'll be a week day.

anyway, I thought I'd share that video with you, remember don't expect anything like these ultra fast vids you can find on youtube, that's a noob lap, I'm still learning (even tho I know it pretty well from several racing sims the real deal is pretty much something else)

unfortunately I couldn't get into the karoussel this time, couple of bikes and a porsche were faster there so I let the way open for them.

    Re: [onboard] driving the ring...

yea you have to save it on your HD to view the vid.

they charge 21 euros for 1 lap
    70 euros for a 4 laps ticket
135 euros for an 8 laps ticket
and so on, until 25 laps ticket

then they have a "jahreskarte" (year card) with unlimited laps that cost a little less than 1000 euros, it's basically 70 laps at the best price.

they used to do a half-jahreskarte from july but it seems not this year...

    Re: [onboard] driving the ring...

Just checked this video out as I've never actually seen the real life ring before. I've only developed a passion for it through racing sims. It's my favorite track and is now on my list of things I must do in my lifetime (that's right there with judging the cannabis cup in Amsterdam) But I have to say, wow! How much different it looks in real life! Turns are sharper, lanes look narrow, straights do not look as long and so on... Yet I can still recognize every turn from the game. It's great. Too bad I'm in the U.S. I'd love to ship my 90 Civic Si over there and give ya a run! I'll just have to "rent" a Type R if I can and run that! Anyways, nice video! And a tip for the camera guy next time, have him hold the camera up to the A piller and hold it steady the whole trip. I noticed seeing the dash a few times more than track. I've done passenger filming before and affixing your hands to the a piller (more preferably the oh *** handle on the pillar if your civic has one) makes for a steady camera angle the whole trip and w/windows down it captures good sound from the motor too! Anyways, can't wait to see the next run, a lil faster too! Lets here that VTEC baby!

    Re: [onboard] driving the ring...

    hehe thanks...

well... actually it shouldn't be that much of a problem to do both of your "to-do" things at the same time/same place. just sit around the track and have fun (no one will come and bother you when you're sitting next to the karoussel, it's a 1h walk from the closest parking)

and yea, the Vtec sounds great ^^ too bad i couldn't really drive as there were many cars but that was fun

    Re: [onboard] driving the ring...

I went to the ring this week end and I found out I had the wrong attitude there.

on the video I slow down before the corners to let the other cars pass me, but the best thing is to take the corner, take the line and then, pull over.

I'll do that next time, I'm pretty sure I can get under 11 next time, I won't time or aim for it, just increase the pace so I stay comfortable enough.

    Re: [onboard] driving the ring...

Do they give you any training or do they just let you loose in there? It sounds a bit intimidating to have a crapload of Porsches and bikes in your mirror and passing you the entire time.

I might get a chance to go there this summer, if I get my RX-8 before my vacation. My friend drives a Suzuki GSXR 1000 so it will be hard to keep up;)

    Re: [onboard] driving the ring...

well, the ring, when open to the public, is considered as a public one way unrestricted toll road.

so if you come by the road with your car, you can drive on it, but there's no training, unless you subscribe to one of the "schools" there (the one I see all the time charges 400€ for the day and you get to drive a 200hp RWD oldschool alfa romeo, but I think you have to pay for your laps too)

basically, it doesn't matter if you know the track from games whatsoever, on your first times there, better drive slowly, carefully, because it has nothing to see with anything you can experience in any video game.

there are many crashes and it's very dangerous and tricky, and that's when you're in a car, you can go everywhere on the internet you will never find anyone who'd recommend you to get there on a bike, specially for your first time.

I've been there a few times when it was raining, so there were no bikes, there were crashes, but no one seriously injured.

both last times I went there, it was sunny days, and several bikers were seriously injured, one got stuck under a car and had to leave in an helicopter.

it's pretty cool to drive there, but in a second, things can go pretty bad so you allways have to leave yourself a decent safety net, don't push your car or self to the limits and allways expect the unexpected. In a game you don't realize how blind the corners are, so once you're there, it's easy to lose your marks and forget about where exactly you are, then you ask yourself the question: "is that a left or right hander after that crest ? where the f**k am I exactly ?" while you see a nissan sunny closing up from behind at incredible speed, battling with a porsche GT3 and a yamaha R6.

so, of course you got your "pride" and you want to drive, but things can go so wrong in an instant that you better go easy, and you'll find out that no one would blame you for that, cause that's how everyone does at start, more or less, depending on the driver, the car or the experience.

and that's no less of a fun anyway, after a few laps you'll start getting abit faster, eventually, then get confidence and enjoy the track a different way.

I didn't do that much laps, only 6, so some places still scare me alot, like the fuchsröhre that seems to go down straight to hell, schwedenkreuz, it'll take me hundred of laps until I can get in that one with confidence, and the list goes on...

there are a few corners I can say I might at least have the line right, maybe not on the video, due to all the faster cars I had to let pass me, but I know I'll do ok in adenauer forst, probably hatzenbach, wipperman scares me a little bit but I think I got it right, I know I can have aremberg right, as well as ex-muhle wich looks allright with a not so powerfull car, both karoussels are pretty much allright, it's not like they have 5 lines so... just remember to never get out of any of em too early!

you wouldn't drive fast on a road you don't know and you know as dangerous would you ? then it's the same thing, wether you know it or not from a video game, get there as if you never seen the track before, try to remember the general idea and drive carefully, so you'll be fine.

you can also rent cars round the track, 1 day costs between 150 (suzuki swift ring tuned) and 1600 (porsche GT3RS) euros a day for specially tuned cars, I can link you to websites if you want.

you can have a megane RS (renault) for about 500 euros a day, or a clio RS 192 for 400, VW golf GTI, BMW M3, you name it.

    Re: [onboard] driving the ring...

Awesome, thanks for the good input.

Obviously I wouldn't drive like in the game, because in the game I know if there are some small curvy straights I just floor it and hope for the best, that's kinda risky with your own car and own life. I'd definitely start slow. It sounds a bit odd that anyone can go there with no training though, as there are many shitty drivers out there, at least one should know how to let people pass safely and so on. But I guess it's just like a road then.

Renting a 911 would be awesome :) But I'd probably drive an RX-8 if I go, as that's the car I'm getting.
