Forza Fans,

I am very excited to announce that Turn 10 has agreed too cooperate with me to conduct a contest to design the new livery for my Time Attack Subaru known as the ShimmySideways STi.  Some of you may recognize my it from magazine coverage of Time Attacks conducted across the nation.  We have had a partnership with Nukabe and Cusco for 4 years, but for the 2008 Season we have picked up a new title sponsor.  Consider yourself among the first people to know that our new title sponsor is Takata.  Takata is a leading global supplier of automotive safety systems for both consumer vehicles and race vehicles.  We are very excited about the new partnership.

Here's where you come in.  The ShimmySideways STi needs new race livery to promote Takata.  We are giving you the opportunity to design it!  I am an active member of the Forza community and I know that there are many talented artists in the community so I am excited to see what you might come up with.  If you would like to get involved, please read the contest rules, guidlines, and timing below.  In addition to earning the honor of having your design on a real-life Time Attack Subaru that will tour nationwide, you could win the following prizes...

To get started, you'll want to buy the template car from the auction house and read the requirements below.  Good Luck and have fun!  Any questions, please ask in this forum.

A. Suggestions and Considerations to Guide your Creativity:

1. Recommended Color Scheme: Green, White, Silver, and Red
2. Base paint may be any color.  If you can figure out how to encorporate the existing Blue paint and save us a respray, big bonus for us.
3. All graphics on top of base paint will be applied by vinyl.  Solid color vinyl and printed vinyl may be used.  Printed vinyl is used for photorealistic images or fades/gradients.  Keep in mind that thin lines, small dots, etc. are hard to apply with vinyl.
4. Here are a couple Takata sponsored JGTC cars which might inspire you...

(^^^Notice the cam lock design on the roof like the Takata MPH harness?  My contact in Takata's marketing group suggested that it would be nice to incorporate this into the design, but not mandatory)

B. Constraints
1. The body should use the FM front bumper and FM rear wing.  All other replacement panels must remain stock.
2. Any wheels of any color may be used of 17" or 18" diameter.
3. Carbon fiber hood and/or trunk may be painted on if you desire.

C. Required Decals & Logos
All required decals and logos are included on the template car available in the auction house.  See below for instructions on aquiring it.

Primary Sponsor: Takata

Logo must appear on both sides, hood, and trunk
Logo may be either of the options illustrated below (Red Takata icon is not required)
Suggestion: Incorporate Takata Motorsports slogan "Go For Green"
Suggestion: Incorporate the image of a Takata Multi Point Harness into the design, possibly on the roof

Subsidary Sponsors:
P&L Motorsports: Must have prominent placement on each side.  Rear fenders recommended.
Nitto Tire: Must be located on front fenders
Nukabe: Must be on both sides
Cusco: Cusco LSD must appear in the corners of the front bumper. 

Redline Time Attack number panel must appear on both sides.

D. How to aquire the template car

The template car includes all of the required decals.  The template car is available for purchase on the FM2 auction house.  I will try to keep the AH stocked but I can not give it my full attention.  Please be kind and distribute copies of the template car to friends or resell copies on the AH to make sure everyone can get a copy.

E. Eligibility

1. You must have a Xbox Live Gold account to participate.  (It is necessary to retrieve the template car, submit photos, and gift the car if it is a finalist)
2. Employees of Takata or their affiliates are not eligible.

F. Submitting your design
1. Designs must be submitted by Thursday May 15th at Noon CST
2. You may submit as many designs as you like.
3. Only liveries created with Forza Motorsports 2’s in-game livery creator are acceptable.  No Photoshoping.
4. To submit your art, take 3 photos of your car in the garage/livery editor environment of Forza Motorsport 2.  Follow the link to the Design Submission Thread and post the photos as a reply be sure to include your Xbox Live gamertag.

G. Design Finals
1. 10 designs will be chosen for the Design Finals by James Elterman of ShimmySideways Racing.  The finalists will be announced in the May 16th, 2008 Pitpass Report.
2. Finalists will be required to gift their car to the XBL account of XeviousR for review by May 20th, 2008.
3. Finalist designs will be submitted to Takata for review.  The Winner, 2nd, and 3rd place design will be selected by Takata and will be announced in the May 23rd Pitpass Report.

*Please note that if your art is selected as the Grand Prize Winner, it could be changed for feasibility or with the discretion of our sponsor.

Update May 4, 2008

More template cars have been loaded on the AH.

I have seen some of the submissions already and I am really getting excited.  Just a few thoughts. If you need more than 3 photos to show your design, go right ahead.  3 to 5 should be plenty.  Also I noticed that some cars have "Livery Contest" on them.  This isn't necessary, but we can always remove it later.

Lots of great submissions so far!  We are going to have a hard time choosing a winner!

It appears that some people have attempted to attach photos in the submission thread, but we can not view your submisison.  It appears that they have attempted to link to the photo's location on the FM.net server.  When you do this, the photos are only visible to you.  You must host the photos somewhere else.  The following users need to review their posts...

The deadline for design submission has now passed.  The only exception are those which have already contacted me about some technical diffulties posting to the thread.  We expect to announce the 10 finalists for the design contest in the May 16 PitPass!  Stay tuned!

Sorry I have been out of touch for a few days.  Thanks to Che for posting the finalists last Friday.  I have accepted all the friend requests that have been sent to me from the finalists.  If you are a finalist, please gift your car to my gamertag; XeviousR.  I will be moving some of the sponsor decals to comply with our sponsorship agreements, and then submiting the designs to Takata for review.

I have received all of the finalist liveries as gifts.  I have spent the last few days tweaking the designs to more acurately reflect how the designs would be applied to the car with consideration to our sponsorship agreements.  I spent a fair amount of time with each design and my appreciation has grown for all of the artists.  You all put a lot of hard work into these designs and I sincerely appreciate it.  I have sent off all of these designs to Takata for review.  They have multiple views of each design.  We are still on track to announce the winner on Friday, May 30th!

:embarassed: Good catch!  I must have had the new Speed Race movie on my mind (Go Speed Go!).  Thank goodness for the edit button.  It is corrected!

The color scheme is just a recommendation.  You can use any colors, but Green is pretty much mandatory, as people most often associate Takata with the color green.

LMAO, well I guess we can guarrantee that 90% of the entries will have the harness/buckle on the roof scheme now!  This should be a really exciting contest, though!

I would have suggested perhaps waiting to open the submissions thread so that you dont end up with guys that paint it quickly using all of the stereotypical Takata design aspects and then claim that everyone else is copying them because so-and-so detail is on their car already...it also would keep others from being discouraged from using certain existing Takata cues that may be on an already submitted car, but their livery would benifit from. 

This would, in turn, give you a MUCH stronger field to choose from - because no one is having to sacrifice any degree of creativity to avoid 'copying'  Just an observation, you learn to watch out for all the tricks of the creatively challenged posers in this business :)

That is a good question.  Personally, I would like to see something simple to moderate, but Takata will ultimately be the judge on this.  They are looking for a car that will "pop" and be "sexy".  It should catch they eye of everyone in proximity.  I recommend that you stick with the style you are most comfortable with.  I would like to show Takata some options between mild and wild.  I don't want to constrain your artistic license too much, but consider that the design should be feasible to replicate on the car.

The harness is not a requirement, but it was the opinion of one individual in their marketing group that this would be a nice touch.

When Turn 10 gets in the office this morning I'll discuss the submission procedure with my contact.  You have a valid point.

Thread Stickied!  I can't wait to see what all the artists out there can come up with.  This should be a really exciting contest!

As for the concern regarding copying.  Don't hold yourself back because you saw a car with a similar design.  Every submission will be unique in some way, however given the very specific guidelines I expect to see many similar designs.  Do what you feel is best, and at the end of the day the design that appeals to James and Takata will win, regardless of similarities to the other submissions.

I saw a couple questions regarding additional sponsors.  Assuming you already have Takata, P&L, Nitto, Nukabe, and Cusco accounted for,  you may put some additional small logos to compliment the design, but it isn't necessary.  Consider them placeholders, and we can fill them in with other sponsors later.  This project is going to get good exposure so I expect that we will pick up some new product sponsors, but it is too soon to drop names.  So feel free to use whatever you want, but be sure that they don't conflict with our current sponsors.
