Re: F1 vs. IndyCar Racing - Which do you prefer?

Well, I grew up in Indianapolis... So what do you think?

Oh, right, I like 'em all. Short track, oval, circuits... F1, NASCAR (Which.. Um.. Is a helluva lot more than the Sprint/Nextel/Winston Cup racing that everyone assumes it is..), IndyCar, Champ Car... I just wish IRL and CART would merge. I was 10 years old when Tony George announced the new IRL and even then I knew that it was a mistake. Outlaws are fun to watch, as is all the short track racing. I don't know how it is elsewhere, but I know when I was living in Indy there were small tracks all over the place with all sorts of exciting things goin' on.

Also, what's with the bashing of oval racing? I guess most of just don't 'get it'. much like many of you seem to accuse Americans of 'not getting' F1. Oval racing, to me, is every bit as exciting as circuit racing. Give me Monaco or Talledega any day, I'll be happy at either.

Also, I don't get why so many think F1 drivers are so much better than Indy/Champ/NASCAR drivers. They're all entirely different machines. I'd love to see an F1 driver hop into a Sprint Cup car at Watkins Glen. I'm sure all that time in those ridiculously light and nimble machines has done well to prepare them to handle a behemoth like a Sprint Cup car. Just the same, I doubt a Sprint Cup racer would be at home in an F1 car. It's all racing. I love it all.

I just hate Tony George Wink [;)]

i don't know why a F1 driver would think that since some come from those forms of racing and a few have gone to them after F1 so yea they can drive those cars and i'm sure any open wheel race driver can do the same it'll just be a few changes but they can get used to it i'm sure...

Re: F1 vs. IndyCar Racing - Which do you prefer?

There have been many crossover drivers over the years, but a quote from 1976 F1 Champ James Hunt biography goes like this. "I was immensely pleased with myself when, in the same car as all those other top aces, I put the thing on pole. But I got in the race and didnt have a clue! Didnt know whether it was Monday or Tuesday. Because of all the high speed drafting and this sort of thing I was right out of my depth. To tell you the truth I was scared shitless!" James was talking about the International Race of Champions which in 76 took place at the Michigan Speedway. They where driving Chevrolet Camaro's, and James crashed out doing around 150 mph.

I much prefer F1,it's a shame there's no USGP this year. But anything on a road course gets my attention from SCCA to the Isle of Man TT.

I Used to be a big F-1 fan til Shumacher retired and now that the FIA droped the US GP.. shame..  So  my vote goes for neither...  I'd hafta go with Champ cars.   are faster.. more power.. just all around better I think.  IRL is just dominated by 1 of 2 teams..  Champ cars are more equal it seems..

I´ve been watching F1 since the 70´s and still do today, but thats more out of tradition. not as fun as it used to be. I preffer watching IRL now. Champcar was great in the 90´s, today F3000 is more exiting then champcar. Also, throw out todays prototypes in sportcar racing and give us back the the good old Group C. Big Smile [:D]

Ive been to NASCAR races. Ive been to IRL races and Ive been to F1 races.

After my first F1 race, I was beyond hooked. Once you hear one of those engines scream by, you wont care about anything else in my opinion. F1 all the way.

And btw, Sony did lose the license to F1. EA signed Hamilton for an F1 game cover.

Re: F1 vs. IndyCar Racing - Which do you prefer?

I'll watch just about any racing, but it's hard to compare F1 to Indycar.  If they would combine the strengths of the two they would have an amazing product.

The F1 technology is otherworldly to me.  20k RPM out of an automobile engine?  Are you kidding me?  There's no sound like it.  Running in the rain?  I remember many races back in the day where Schumacher was hanging out in second or third, it started raining, and suddenly he's two seconds faster than anyone else on the track.  Now that's driving skill.  They need to fix the aero and brakes on the cars now though.  Both are so good it's nearly impossible to pass.

Indycar is fun to watch b/c it's such close racing.  The techology is kind of boring, and the current driver crop is nothing special IMHO.  It appears they often run out of talent before running out of bravery.  That makes for unpredictable excitement though.

    Currently taking a break....

The retraction of TC this year will help passing dramatically. The car is TOTALLY in the hands of the driver and not a computer.

That makes me sad... Penske and Marlboro got there way with this one..  Marb constantly bought out the tickets at each race to send to thier customers (me being one of them and many friends...) so they had more people in the stands then Champ cars..  and in my opinion Champ cars were the better of the 2...  IRL only got the top spot because of that 1 team and sponsor...

Is a sad day now that IRL won the openwheel war in America..  just sad..  Sad [:(]

Gotta remember at Indy a few years back Montoya and Jeff Gordon swapped rides on Indy's roadcourse..  Both got very close to what the other did in his own car.  So it all depends on the driver, and if they can change cars like that and run fast or not.
