    Steering wheel question

    Hi all

I did some research to find an answer to this, but I found nothing that was clear ...

I've been playing Forza2 for a lot of time now, and just decided to buy the MS wheel. It feels fantastic, but I noticed a little vertical wobble in the wheel. Is it "normal" ? Everything else looks perfect, the FFb works well, no bug at all, etc.

I'd like to know if it's going to be worse after a certain time or if it's normal and will stay the same ?

    Re: Steering wheel question

They do wear after a while, it is basically just plastic inside.  If the wheel wobble is more than you feel acceptable, maybe you can take it back to the retailer and trade units.  BTW - since you're relatively new to the wheel, here are two threads which can be helpful:

http://forums.forzamotorsport.net/forums/thread/2256740.aspx and http://forums.forzamotorsport.net/forums/thread/1122349.aspx  BTW - Disregard the references to Turn 10's Tactile Training Guide.  They wiped it out in the forum makeover and it doesn't exist anymore.

Thanks for the fast answer. I'll take a look at those two threads !

I don't think the wobble isn't acceptable, unless it's something that nobody else has experienced. (No wobble at all would be nice, but is it possible ?) It's why I'd like to know if, in general, this small wobble is present just after the wheel is bought.

    Re: Steering wheel question

There is wobble in mine and I have only had it a month or 2. I noticed it pretty early on, can't say how early. I also can't say if it's normal but I am glad to hear I'm not the only one with some play.

    Re: Steering wheel question

Yes, it always seemed to be there in mine.  I would make sure you stablize the mounting on a table or something firm.  Remember, it doesn't take much force to make the cars turn.  There aren't necessarily many turns in the game where you can't take them by turning the wheel perhaps a 1/4 turn in either direction.  And, if you use manual shifting with the paddles, be gentle.  A quick little flick of the paddles with even a single finger or two will work just fine.

The wheel, I think, is more about finess, using accurate, steady lines around the tracks than having to over-power the car with corrections.  That will get you in trouble (especially with fish-tailing, which you can never beat) when you fight it too much.

    Re: Steering wheel question

I just won my first race in arcade mode :)

I did some adjustments to the wheel settings so I can turn more easyly. I mounted my wheel on a small table I built yesterday, it's perfect.

Is it possible that the left paddle is less responsive than the right one ??

    Re: Steering wheel question

They should be the same.  Are you right-handed?  If so that's why you think there's a difference.  I use only the forefinger and middle finger to shift.  After a while you get used to the paddles, know when to downshift into turns and end up using the accelerator more than brakes to control your turns.  Braking should be done in a straight line because there is only 100% available for brakes, the roll of the wheels and directional control.  If you're trying to brake and turn at the same time, for instance, you'll get 80% braking and only 20% direction (depending on how hard you brake).  There was a Pitpass Report back in early 2007 which describes how this works.

    Re: Steering wheel question

I didn't thought about me being right-handed, it explains it all ^^

And about the braking thing, I discovered all this after a few weeks of play when I bought the game. Actually, I was not bad at all with the pad. I even managed to win a race or 2 with the stock Lingelfelter lol. (I play without assist, with hard AI) But thanks to remind me of all this, because it's a lot more difficult with the wheel.

So now, I got 4 months to get used to it ^^ Thanks for the fast replies !

    Re: Steering wheel question

After a few days that I spent to get used to the wheel, I decided to restart the campain so I can play it "wheel only"

I'm now playing with no assists, and with the highest AI difficulty, and I just finished all the Proving Grounds races :) I have the impression to play with a completly different game :D I really enjoy this wheel ^^

There's something I forgot to ask when I posted this thread : There is a small deadzone with the force feedback. When the wheel is centered, it's like if there was no ffb at all. Is it normal ??

(I guess all those questions about my wheel being normal look weird  ... but I'm the kind of guy who wants everything to be perfect ... ;)

    Re: Steering wheel question

I haven't experienced that, but you are running only on the external power supply, correct?  Take the batteries out if you've got them in there.  You can get weird results by trying to run both, and the Force Feedback is only available when you're on the power supply, not on batteries.

    Re: Steering wheel question

There is no battery in my wheel :( Only the external power supply.

It's not a huge ffb deadzone ... maybe 5 or 6 degrees from left to right. So when I'm in a race and going straight, I can turn the wheel 2 or 3 degrees on each side without noticing any ffb from the wheel. There's a small deadzone where the car doesn't respond, but this is normal.

    Re: Steering wheel question

Could be your settings in Options/Wheel Layout/Advance Options ((X) button).  Have you tried playing with those (note what you already have so you don't really goof things up) a bit to see if something is amiss?  I generally run at 100% on both Force Feedback Scale and Vibration Scale.

    Re: Steering wheel question

Yep, I played with the settings when I was trying to finish a lap without crashing my car lol. Since then, I didn't change them (and when I did, I noticed no change in the ffb)

Hmm ... well I just went in the menu to give you my current settings, but it looks like it's the default ones ... FFb and vibrations are set to 100 %.

I'll try to set the wheel deadzone to 0 (the default setting was 2 %)

    Edit : I have no more ffb ... at all ... :/

Edit 2 : After rebooting my xbox, the ffb is back. With the wheel deadzone set to 0, the ffb deadzone appears to be less important, but it's still there.

Hmmm.  Might just be the wireless, too.  Keep things like cell phones away from it.  LOL!

    Re: Steering wheel question

Belated answer to this point:  Do the mod that replaces the plastic bush by a huge ballrace: eliminates all slop completely. I used the 'thick' bearing, unlike thread 237811  as I felt it would less slop (can't remember link - Google should find it).

I have done the mod, but I reverted to my Logitech Force FX wheel as I get faster lap times with it. Don't know why, but the wheel just has a better feel to it, although the pedals are a bit flimsy. So good I just bought another Force FX at 'end of line pricing' for 23GBP as a spare - going to make some real pedals with racing brake and accelerator units to go with both the Logitech and Microsoft wheels - just need 10 to 20K pots. on each control.

Fanatec Clubsport Turbo S LOOKS good, but availability is supposedly end of September. I ordered, and then cancelled because I wasn't happy with the complete lack of consumer protection when paying by Paypal for something that wan't even going to be available within paypal's 45 day problem resolution deadline.

Be interesting to see if they have got Microsoft's force feedback implemented properly, but I'll let others find out Smile .

    Colin
