What an interesting and well written article. As somone who is a marginal F1 fan (I watch the races but don't really know the history), it was a good primer. I definitely wondered while reading this what it could mean for Forza. It would be interesting to eventually have some open wheeled cars in the game.

If you mean "CART" by Indycar then I prefer Indycar.
Its a huge waste to make a high tec open wheel racer turn left in a concrete fishbowl a thousand times in an afternoon.
F1 is O.K. but, but somehow a little too "elitist".

Exactly my thoughts as well.
Ovals are BORING.
I prefer 'Indy'...pre IRL split. (Tony George is an Idiot)

I prefer Formula 1 because of its international flavor. But It has less passing than CART. But with Schumacher leaving F1 will be wide open next year and everyone will be scraping for the number 1 spot.
If you're the smartest person in your group, then you're in the wrong group.

I prefer F1, but, I watch both. Like Coke and Pepsi, they're both sugarwater! You have to have some big cojones to do either one.

Re: F1 vs. IndyCar Racing - Which do you prefer?
Nice article! My Gamertag probably gives it away, but I am a huge F1 Fan, Although I do like Indycar and Chanpcar they do not come close to the spectical that is Formula 1, sure F1 is bogged down with political in-fighting, and it could be said that the race is decided in the pits, but these thing add to what makes F1 great.
An F1 car is fascinating machine, they are so heavily engineered that it boggles the mind, the competition between teams is un-rivaled in any other race series, the lengths that one team will go to to get a few tenths on another team is crazy! Eveything in F1 is extreme from the cars to the drivers to the teams, nothing is done by halves.
The thing about Indycar is that the cars seem to be out the box open wheelers, the cars just arent as exciting as F1 cars.
Another thing about Indycar is the amount of ovals that it visits, I find it hard to pay attention to a full race without going in to a daydream I cant fully involve myself with it, when they visit a proper track it is far more interesting to watch.
Formula 1 is at the pinnacle of motorsport, the hi-technology, the worlds best drivers, the glamour, the history, the worlds most advanced cars, the politics and the tracks all add up a race series that leaves the rest clinging on to its slipstream.

Re: F1 vs. IndyCar Racing - Which do you prefer?
No disrespect to the folks in IRL or what was CART but I have to admit, in my mind I always considered CART to be F1 wanna be's too. And I consider IRL to be something less than CART. There are lots of dedicated and talented folks involved but if I had the choice to watch all three I would be most interested in F1.
Having said that, I'm also not really all that interested in F1 either these days. The technology involved has ruined it for me. I like it simple and all the driving aids just turn me off.
Personally I'd rather watch Formula Fords (memories...). No doubt the drivers are still extremely talented in all of those formats. But watching Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet, Frentzen...that was the peak of F1 to me. It doesn't have to be complicated to be good. In fact, quite the opposite for me.
A small but vocal customer...

Re: F1 vs. IndyCar Racing - Which do you prefer?
I think the most exiting kind of racing is production car racing where you have all kinds of different production cars slightly modified battling it out. (I don't even know what form of racing they call it but I've seen it on tv). I think it's exiting to see production Mustangs against BMW's against Porches against vipers, vetts...whatever. The drivers have to learn the advantages and disadvantages of the paticular car they're driving. All on road courses...of course.

No, not really. Maybe it was early 90's as opposed to the 80's. I just remember I liked watching him drive although it seems like he rarely finished. Strictly from memory (which may be wrong), it seems like he was on one of the lesser teams and was always running a slower car but always made the most of it. Maybe I've got a memory lapse. I can't remember exactly when Prost left F1. I guess I could check...

Re: F1 vs. IndyCar Racing - Which do you prefer?
I am a fan of true speed and technology, which F1 has in spades. I went to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in 2004 (when V10's were stilll around) and the pace was mind-blowing, I was standing at Copse corner, the first corner; this is a 170mph+ 90 degree, tight right hand and it was breathtaking to see the cars charge upto it at around 190 and just lift off the throttle slightly (not even brake!) and fly around. More-over, it's the sound of F1 cars that truly makes me love the sport; Also during the silverstone weekend I was sitting at Club corner where the cars were under full-load acceleration...the sound is utterly insane! The cars come off the apex at around 80mph and hit 170mph in a couple of seconds with a noise of over 140 dB that's just heaven for me!
I was also at this years French Grand Prix at Magny-Cour...thus after the change to V8's. I was expecting the experience to be some-what dampened: Lower speed + less and "worse" car engine noise. But I was plesently surprised. The cars were not that much slower than in 2002 when I had gone to the same race and they were still DAMN loud! The noise is alot different now:
-Lower pitch
-Fewer bangs and back-fires....cleaner
-Slightly less loud (still around 135dB at 10 metres)
But I am still in love with them, especially the sound of the Super Aguri..by far the best sounding of the V8's.
And to compare this to a Indycar is somewhat silly. Indycar's sound crap tbh lol (heard one at the Goodwood festival of speed this summer) they are V8's of course but no where near as loud or as high pitched as F1 cars and have significantly slower acceleration (they were doing fast-starts at Goodwood).
Overall, F1 is more dramatic when actually there and don't have to race crappy ovals (damn I hate them!).

Re: F1 vs. IndyCar Racing - Which do you prefer?
IndyCar back in 90's before the split was good and I enjoyed it. IndyCar racing by Papyrus was the BEST racing simulation at that time. There were so many good drivers in IC back then: Andretti Sr. and Jr., Al Unser Jr., Emerson Fittipaldi, Bobby Rahal, Paul Tracy, etc., etc.
F1 was good too with emergence of Schumacher and Benetton. Senna moving to Williams. Mika Hakkinen starting in McLaren, etc., etc. Simteks, Footworks, Lotus, and Minardis did not make a significant impact but certainly made the races more colourful.
I used to like them both but I only watch F1 these days. Champ Car field of 18 is embarassing. Champ Car development seems to be really slow where F1 makes changes to the car on every race. I don't mind the drivers being the primary factor in winning races but technology has to develop too.
I would love to see F1/ChampCar on FM2.

Prost left in 93, and Frentzen drove for Williams the year Villeneuve won the title (97), so yes he did have a chance in good car. In fact in 99, when driving for Jordan, he was in genuine contention for the drivers title with 3 races to go. In 97 and 98 Villeneuve absolutely blew Frentzen into the weeds.

Re: F1 vs. IndyCar Racing - Which do you prefer?
Let's see - since F1 is supposed to be in an exclusive deal with Sony, if I were going for open wheel cars, I 'spose I would choose the IRL. They do have tracks that do not go just 'round and around.
But, since I think open wheel cars are tiresome, I am ambivalent on the subject. ![Big Smile [:D]](/emoticons/emotion-2.gif)

Re: F1 vs. IndyCar Racing - Which do you prefer?
Well I would have to say an F1 cars would be cool to have in the game, and with all the F1 cars going to MS ECU's next year I thought maybe one day they would get the rights to F1. That said I think MS would be better off creating a sole F1 game like Sony is doing, that way they can focus on making it realistic as to the series. But they have F1 like cars in GT why not in Forza.

Re: F1 vs. IndyCar Racing - Which do you prefer?
I like F1 primarily because the cars have more advanced tech and the circuits are more varied. Indy seems to bore me with it's ovals.
