Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
i think 4wd. you can put down a lot more power out of a corner and they are far easier to control and faster than fr, rr, mr or ff (when set up correctly) and i just prefer driving my AUDI RS4 on the track than many of my other cars.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
SBP:In order to get the best out the RWD, the power to weight ratio, needs to be somewhat high. If i was going quartermiling, drifting or just having fun on a track, i would choose RWD. I know a RWD is great on track, but I would always choose a AWD if possible. A well "set up" car like a Porche 911 Carrera S (997), is hard to beat on a track. And it's VERY fun to drive.
FWD cars are not as fun to drive, as the RWD, unless it's a small track with a load of tight corners. I find it to be a benefit for smaller cars(like Peugeot 206 GTI, Ford Fiesta RS), to have FWD, since the added weight(from driveshafts in RWD and AWD) would destroy the performance.
AWD seems to be the best choice, but also depend on a somewhat high power to weight ratio, to counter the added weight. The AWD delivers massive grip, so it's hard to make the car drift or wheelspinning. Seems like a lot of supercar manufactures are starting to make the cars AWD, because of the better handling and performance. Just take a look at the Audi R8, Lamborghini Gallardo, Murcielago, Porche 911 4'series, turbo etc.
I hope you understand what I'm trying to say, since english isn't my main language! Best regards from Sven (Denmark, Scandinavia)
Now, give us the RUF RT12!
RWD = can have the most fun FWD = get down a windy hill fast AWD = pwn in racing/grip/rally /thread

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
Hi, the order of speed for me would be .... 1st RWD (generally quickest on a decent surface) 2nd AWD, (pretty good on all) 3rd FWD, (normally the slowest formula)
Now if you included MR (mid engine) that would be No1 pushing the rest down a slot.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
RWD, AWD FWD even MR all depends on the car to determine if its better or not. Good example of this is the Renault clio v6. MR. excellent exciting car but terrible handling at low speeds. a range rover has a better turning circle!!
Generally RWD is seen as best (must be its used in F1) although AWD seems to be catching it up (alot of new supercars now adays going in the direction of AWD Lambo's etc) AWD cars tend to be the best handling cars. RWD the most 'exciting' lol FWD mrs sunday driver. put anything more than 250hp threw the front wheels and its over kill. 2 wheels trying to control 250hp and steer at same time not good.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
The old debate of rear v front wheel drive has been going on for years, and will probably drag on for many more years to come aswel. Looking at it from a engineers point of view in a race situation front and rear drive would be used imo for different styles of driving and racing. In a front wheel drive the car is pulled and although this normaly means it takes more effort to move something it is also alot easier to control the load (great for rally driving or dirt track racing). In a rear wheel drive it pushes the load which in general means it takes less effort to shift the car but is harder to control (ideal for high speed road racing like F1).
2nd Place means nothing.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
I've driven all of the above, although my only track experience is with AWD. Daily driven, AWD is vastly superior to FWD, having abandoned my long line of FWD sport coupes and hatches for a WRX. It's also excellent in rain and snow and on gravel. That being said, when it comes to a road course, RWD is the best, generally speaking. There's exceptions to every rule, of course, but when you look at cars racing at the ALMS and F1 levels, FWD could not compete. It's an excellent means for generally unskilled drivers to get around due to its inherent understeer, but that's about the extent of it. Even in rally, you don't see FWD competing at the high end much.

Hi, Actually if you knew about configs of cars, you would know F1 cars are MR (mid engine),RWD normally means engine in the front driving the rear wheels.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
technically it doesn't say anything about where the engine is located. it says FWD vs. RWD. if it meant specifically front engine rear wheel drive it would say something like ff vs. fr. or ff vs. mr. so his example of formula 1 cars as a dominant rwd car is valid.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
DanDiggler: Even in rally, you don't see FWD competing at the high end much.
Ummm...no. Ever heard of Citroen or Peugeot? Actually, RWD is the layout that is non-existent in high end rallying (a sport that separates the men from the boys, frankly) - just doesnt work on loose road surfaces.
I have had daily drivers in FWD, RWD, and AWD. If you live anywhere where the weather gets bad and the roads actually have curves and hills in them, RWD is useless other than a summer toy or track car. Yes, with an ideal set up, RWD's are pretty much unbeatable on the track.
A small, light FWD car is actually a lot of fun on twisty mountain roads, though, and more practical.
AWD is more expensive and needs more power, but it really takes the cake in overall performance across the spectrum of different daily situations. Set it up right, and they'll run with the best of 'em on the track too. I know I wouldn't ever go back to having 2WD of any kind after having an AWD daily driver.
I wouldnt mind having an RX7 for a track/weekend toy, though :)
This is the quattroCrazy sig, Its not the Crazyquattro sig, This is my favorite sig, Because it is my sig. If this was your sig, You'd probably like it more, But maybe thats just because it was your sig, But it's not your sig, It's the quattroCrazy sig.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
I had a heavily-tuned BMW 325 that I had to drive in the winter when my Jeep was in the shop. I am very 'dialed in' to my cars, so it was a little easier for me to keep it stable in snow. One slip up, however, and the rear end would have been all over the place. On the strip in the right conditions, the RWD was great. And of course, on the road courses the car handled nice as well. It was a BMW, that is what it was designed to do.
The next 'project' after that was a Mazda MX-3 RS that I built up (this happens a lot to my cars) to just over 300 whp. Keep in mind the car was a touch over 2000 pounds, so 300 horses is a lot on that platform. The big problem with that car is that it was FWD. No hookup at launch if you were not paying attention. I could blow through three gears standing still if I went WOT at a standstill. But cornering? The FWD combined with Mazda's TTL rear end (passive all-wheel steering) and a good suspension made it a super track car. I had pretty much built a FWD Miata. Even used a lot of Miata parts in the engine.
My current project is a Galant VR4 which is AWD, AWS, Turbo. I am currently pushing 11s at the strip and can turn right around and drive it to the road course. It is a heavy car, almost 4000 pounds, but with 400 WHP, a beefy suspension and built trans, it has no problems doing what I want it to do.
AWD needs more power, but in my mind for anything other than drifting, I now prefer it for pretty much everything. I have no problems with giving my heavy car more power. ;)
My philosophy follows over into Forza. Sometimes I will load up a RWD just so I can go sideways around a heavily-cornered track, but for the most part I bring up the AWD.
Drive hard in RL. Drive HARDER in VR.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
Seeing as how most cars these days are coming out FWD it's possible that they are more popular and besides in real life my bro drives an FWD Hyundai Excel 1.3l sedan. But seeing that I'm a fanatic for drifting I stand for RWD but I would trust AWD in track racing cause they don't slip off the track like a RWD car. That's why I put faith in AWD and RWD cause they have their own good purposes.
If it ain't a GT-R it ain't a car.

Re: FWD vs. RWD: Which is Better?
I think that AWD is the comfort way to drive, but certainly lots of RWD are the best (sallenS7, lotus elise and exige models, mercedes CLK GTR and so on...) i encountered the leon cupra supercup great (FWD) but the best cars have a midle engine position ^^ cheers
