New Cobalt SS beats evo mr, bmw, G37, list goes on...
- so i just got my car & driver issue. [Track Meat].
but to get straight to the point for those who dont have car&driver mag.
so the track is Virginia International Raceway. so i have to say im incredibly impress by the new cobalt ss and how good it is. and extremly disapointed by the G37 coupe (was my personal fav.)
so here are the lap times. cars bolded are all [LL2].
- Cobalt SS- 3:13.0 [LL1]
- Evolution MR- 3:13.3
- Bmw 135i- 3:13.7
- Lexus IS F- 3:14.0
- Audi S5- 3:14.6
- S2000 CR- 3:15.0
- Challenger SRT8- 3:16.3
- Lotus Elise SC- 3:16.6
- Infinity G37 coupe- 3:17.5
- WRX STi- 3:19.0
- Caliber SRT4- 3:20.8 [LL1]
- Golf R32- 3:21.8
- Mugen Civic Si- 3:24.8
- Volvo C30 T5 Version 2.0- 3:26.6 [LL1]
this is the list for their LL1 & LL2 cars wich seperates the car classes. in forza terms LL1= D class & LL2= C class. there were from LL1- LL5. except their clases are based on price range. since price = performance. most of the time.
other matchups that stood out to me were.
- Viper ACR- 2:48.6 [LL3]
- F430 Scuderia- 2:54.6 [LL5]
and the sedans.
- Cadillac CTS-V- 3:04.0 [LL2]
- Mercedes Benz C63 AMG- 3:06.5 [LL2]
my final thoughts i was rooting for the G37 to perform good since i was highly considering this car. obviously theres more to car buying then laptimes but it will always be in the back of my head. but when you have a $22,995/$23,795 cobalt ss going faster then a $37,015/$44,115 G37 its kinda hard to even consider the car.
also the mugen civic si its rediculously expensive $30,170 for 197hp weighing 2,940ib thats 14.9ib per hp. were the cobalt has 260hp for 2,909 thats 11.2ib per hp. however hondas are reliable so thats something for the long run. wrx sti sucks its ugly its slow its lame. um lotus why are you making the elise heavier?? (2,029ib) also Evo MR wha happened??
cadi kicks mercs *** :D
you guys/girls should check out the magazine its a good read for more indeph info. or check out their website for videos. i would but every time i go there my computer runs slow and videos takes forever.

Not the same level of luxury at all. You would take the cobalt over a G37 because it goes faster around the track ? Just go get a 20 year old civic, and swap a K engine in it. There you go, faster around the track dans your cobalt.

G37>Cobalt.
The G37 is more complete car. Its more ideal for daily use and family car. But the Cobalt is a tuner, bad quality interior and cheap, but thats what tuners are all about. Anyways, you get what you pay for..

Re: New Cobalt SS beats evo mr, bmw, G37, list goes on...
this cobalt is fwd right? and it's not really stripped out, just a "hot hatch" as it were.
how the hell can it be faster than all of those, Including a Lotus SC?! something isn't right. Do you guys over the pond get diluted european cars?!

I remember a year or two ago the Cobalt beat the Skyline. Just because it's N. American doesn't mean it's heavy and slow.

^^ lol. im pretty sure we do. probably all the cars that dint meet standards.
yes the G37 is more luxurious but if a cobalt pull up next to me im just going to put the windows down and hope the cobalt sees the interior as it blows by. lol..
but man thats almost hard to believe how much faster it is around the track when compared to the other cars like evo and wrx well actually just evo..
man im really flaming on the sti. lol.

Re: New Cobalt SS beats evo mr, bmw, G37, list goes on...
I actually think the Cobalt SS is a really sweet ride. It has a nice interior, well bolstered racing seats, and actually seems to be quite comfortable. I will agree and say that it is in no way, as nice as the Infiniti, but I could probably close my eyes and not know which car I am in. Eyes open again, the G37 is just hands down superb.

mmm... a civic in good shape, depending of the year, would probably cost you around 3000 $. + The k Swap, around 10000. Lets say you put 7000 $ to get it to your taste.... You still have 10k $ for your repair to get to the cobalt price.

Re: New Cobalt SS beats evo mr, bmw, G37, list goes on...
Some people don't care about a luxury interior though, some would rather have the best performance. And if you can get that in a car half the price, then that's not a bad deal at all. I think that was the original point.
Sure, there are other things that affect cost, but it would be nice to only spend around $23k and still have excellent performance, especially if that is all you can afford.

I'd still rather have the Ecotec mill; that motor is the second coming...

Re: New Cobalt SS beats evo mr, bmw, G37, list goes on...
the civic is an awesome car; however, to get the civic to handle as good as the cobalt, the ride would be really harsh, not saying the cobalt is butter; and it has a balanced set up of suspension geometry; ( a couple yrs back the track prepped cobalt beat a bunch of track prepped R34s , Gen 3 RX7s, E46 M3’s, EVOs & STIs on the time attack in button willow) and as for the G37 ;that is a badass car; Nissan built that car for all around “sporty” driving; comfort and luxury, (not HARD CORE track days) which GM build the cobalt to kick a$$ on the track; the cobalt and civic will never have the ride and luxury of the G37; its comparing apples to oranges.

Re: New Cobalt SS beats evo mr, bmw, G37, list goes on...
im not surprised by this at all, take the old ss cobalt and it was good, now the new one with 260 hp and 260 torque its a night and day difference from the old one, they have a hell of alot of balls. the ecotec is a damn nice piece and with a twin scroll turbo and direct injection, its pretty nice, they max out about 14.7 psi stock, pretty nice. i dont know if you guys have ever had the chance to drive one, but man these things get with the program. for the money, they are the best car, performance wise. not the best features, but the cars are built to perform.

Thanks, RACER; I was thinking '20s-'30s style, roided up and ready to throw down when I drew it four years ago.
Back to the 'Balt; my family got our hands on a Cobalt Sport coupe last fall(the sport was formerly the naturally-aspirated SS) and that thing was a sharp little beast. It had the SS style bumper and wheels, a 170hp Ecotec and was silver with black leather interior. Anytime I was lucky enough to drive(those front seats were awesome), I had the windows down, the sunroof open, and was blasting XM channel 42 through what I assume was the upgraded sound system(factory sub in the trunk). Even when I had to sit in the back for our trip from central Florida to New York for Thanksgiving, I was comfortable(mind you, it was a coupe, and I'm 6'2"/300lbs). It sucked when we had to hand it back over to Budget.

Re: New Cobalt SS beats evo mr, bmw, G37, list goes on...
I'm actually more shocked that the Challenger beat the Lotus around VIR. Then again VIR has some long straights so I suppose its like comparing a missle car vs a grip car in Forza 2 lol. Mugen Civic, what a ripoff. So many more better cars, Euro, Jap, and American that are far better for $30k. Who the hell pays $30k for a Civic anyways? I don't understand how it beat the Evo and STi though, don't they have more power then the Cobalt?
I wouldn't rule out a G37, far better quality car than a Cobalt. It's like someone else said, you get what you pay for. The G37 isn't the fastest or best handling car out there, but its not really designed to be. Thats what its counter-part, the Z is for. The G37 is basically just a mix of sportyness from the Z's chassis, but with the plush comfort of a luxary car. With that kind of niche its just going to be an enjoyable car to drive, not to race.
The Viper vs 430 doesn't surprise me. Far too many people underestimate the Viper's capabilities simply because of its big engine and enormous power. The car can handle, and it handles extremely well. Give it a little downforce like the ACR has, and that car will walk just about anything that comes its way.
And go Cadillac for beating Mercedes.

Mercedes never realy made good Track-cars. Other than DTM which is only Mercedes they realy don't compete. Cadillac is street-legal and Track ready. The Cadillac will move into the GT Series.
Mercedes is Pedigree, while the Cadillac is brute-force with Power-windows. Oh, and the Nurburgring Time was set by the Cadillac with an Automatic transmission. They expect to remove another 2 to 3 sec. with a Manual.
