New Cars, New Projects -- Turn 10's Growing Garage

Everyone has a dream car. At least it’s safe to assume anyone taking the time from their day to read this blog would. This week Nathan Holt, a programmer here at our headquarters of awesome took the plunge into owning his. Nate had this to say about his new ride:

“Ever since 2004 when Mazda began production on the RX8, my head would turn every time I saw one cruising down the street. The rotary engine is quick, revving at lightening speeds and providing the wheels with immediate power, and the exterior is just damn sexy!

Since the transmission on my old car was dying, I found an excuse to get myself a sweet new ride!  It is a 2008 RX8 40th Anniversary Edition with the appearance package, polished rotary accents, rear spoiler, and fender strakes; this includes the front air dams, the side aero flares, and the rear flares; the interior of the vehicle has copper-red and black leather seats, which is just icing on the cake.  The cake is what is under the hood: a 1.3-liter dual-rotary RENISIS engine that is controlled by a 6-speed manual transmission.

Immediately after driving the beast off the lot, I took it on a predetermined circuit that I had previously mapped out just for the occasion.  To sample its cornering limits and suspension, I zoomed around the cloverleaf onto the freeway.  I shifted through all its gears along the straights of the freeway and Maple Valley, cruised over the scenic-north along Lake Sammamish, and returned through the twisty hills of Paradise Lake where the DTCS probably kicked in and saved me from my over zealousness.  This car is simply amazing!

Here at Turn 10 there is a rivalry between the rotary engine and the piston engine, and I have to admit, I am a little biased toward the rotary not just because of its simplicity and aesthetics, but for its power and thrill.  Now since I have obtained my dream car, the rotary fan club has just earned a lifetime member.”

Nate's outstanding RX-8 wasn’t the only new ride to find its way into the Turn 10 parking lot this week. Our resident drift expert Landin Williams found himself writing a check for an astonishingly mint 1985 AE86 Corolla complete with everything you need to get all sorts of sideways. Also newcomer Aaron Brooks claimed a beautiful Black 1995 BMW E36 M3 Coupe. Aaron originally had his eye on a 4-door M3, but after a persuasive conversation with his wife changed his focus to the two door. Both vehicles are true enthusiasts’ cars once hailed as break through advancements in their own time which, sadly, are becoming harder and harder to find.

Which car takes the cake for best new addition to our ever growing collection? It’s actually a much closer call than you might expect. All are well sorted, respectable FR machines designed more for high RPM action than stump pulling torque and yet each has a style all its own. Despite how ‘JDM tight’ Landin might claim his Corolla to be Nate’s Mazda is an undeniably classy choice, an all around package… even if it is missing a few cam shafts!

Awesome choice!  I'm biased of course, I own an '04 GT Titanium Grey, loaded with nav.  I love it, the most fun to drive car I've ever owned.  I've had mine almost a year and I still look for excuses to get out of the house sometimes and drive my car, lol.  Our local owners group has a page on Facebook(Cedar Valley Mazda RX-8 Club) too if you wanna see my amateur photography skills ;P
Enjoy your new love, you should check out rx8club.com too, lots of info. and a lot of nice helpful people with a love for the same car.

Awesome set of wheels Nate :) I know what you mean about it being a headturner - I still check them out when one drives by or, better yet, is parked up.  Good balance between practicality and fun to drive, from what I hear too.  Extremely jealous!

I love it, I'm currently looking to import an RX-8 from the US. Though a 2004, and it's gonna cost me about $65,000 . Yes, we have some sick import fees and duties, but the car new here is like $150,000 due to the same fees and environment tax and so on :)

Rotaries ROCK. Congrats on the nice ride.

Congrats on the new ride, Nate.  The RX8s are sexy looking cars.

Is anyone from Turn 10 eyeing a new Evo X?  I'm waiting until the Twin Clutch-SST arrives here in the States.

Racer X: Don't sweat it!  I think I'm just about the only person here who takes the bus daily to work.  Of course that will all change soon, but you know what the bus is great.  No stress...you can hang out and read a book or listen to some music, and your helping out the environment!

I know I will still be taking the bus even with a car...just maybe not for the first few weeks!

The 'queue' starts behind me.  I informed Nate that all management overhead gets to take cars for a spin after the owner has gotten past the mandatory break-in period.

Nice ride Nate, I'll stick with my 99 C5 hardtop, good ol' LS1. Talk about a good range of power throughout! The 99 and 2000 hardtops are the lightest Vettes ever manufactured. So 350hp n' 350 torque (set of Borlas xtra 5 hp  wooooo.....)at least they sound awesome, will throw ya back in yer Seat .Handles great also...Not ditsen you guys, jus having fun..... Yep - I am. The moment the A6 ('02 2.7T) runs out of warranty this summer, I'm going to go check it out. Definitely the MR w/ Tech package. Yum.

I've only seen a couple of Lancers in my area so far, and they look good anyways.  I'm definately going to be checking out the MR.  Have you gone to mitsucars.com yet?  They just recently rolled out the ability to build an Evo here in the States.  Though, for now, you can only build the GSR.  Some of the options looked good, but pricey.  Like the ridiculous rear wing extension that looks like a piece of curved plastic that's been run along the top of the wing.  I'm not much on mods anyways, but I'll probably be looking for a better ECU and exhaust, maybe a carbon fiber roof and hood later on.  Gotta keep it simple because my wife will occasionally drive it too.  Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qDfSzBN778

I drove an 06' RX-8 and I loved the car! Great balance, handled great, very predictble, easy to match revs, and good throttle response but I thought the torque was just not quite there until you get the revs up then the power was nice! this was actually in 2006 so it was new i drove a few different cars before I decided on a 2005 WRX. I had the car for a month then took it to some friends at Titan Motorsports and they hd the car for nearly 3 months going back and forth from Titan to CFT (Central Florida Turbo) to have it tuned after ALOT of money wa spent on a bigger turbo (VF22) 650cc injectors, 255lph pump, TXS turboback, TXS up pipe, STI intercooler, etc.etc.etc. I ended up with 386 AWHP on a mustang dyno. anyways I didnt mean to ramble so much about my car when we're talkin bout Nates beautiful RX-8. Awesome car but I still cant figure out why they dont turbo the car from factory considering the 3rd Gen RX-7 was such great car! but could you imagine the reputation that car would have today if it was an N/A car? would it have near the same respect today if it was N/A and not a Turbo car? or how much more respect would the RX-8 have if it did have a Turbo? does anybody know why they chose not to use  a Turbo or Turbo?  Regardless Nate you hve an aweome machine!! good luck with it and enjoy it as im sure you will!!

Going on 2 years with my RX8.  Love it despite the slightly thirsty nature.

The first car I've driven that put the Porsche 928 in second place for touring cars.

Now if only Forza could figure out how to build a similar model.

In the game the polar moment of inertia destroys the realism of the car.  Maybe the model structure doesn't support altering the polar moment but it seems to be accurate for some of the other various engine layouts.

Trailing throttle UNDERSTEER.  Like the 928, the RX8 rear suspension geometry turns the rear to toe-in as the suspension drops.

My bet is Nate will probably spend a bit more time trying to tune an RX8 in Forza and then give up.  Too bad, it's an awseome car.
